The (access of the Atlantic Keel Team, representing this city at the annua! meeting of 1 the Firemen's Association, held at Salisbury, last week, was most creditable and wor thy of the demonstrations shown the victors, who returned last lit. In trie several contests, the young men from New Berne have proven thai theycan cope witn jne nest teams in the State, and carry 'oft most of the prizes, v ' . - In the five contest!, in which the New Berne team entered they took one, first prize, the State Champion- flip AKUk, IWU, DCUUUU JJlliCO, nut, , third place, and were rolled out in the horse hose reel race., ' I In two of the contests, with a lit tle more care exercised. New Berne might have taken first 'instead of second prizes. But there are no regrets over any thing the team did at Salisbury. They were in the tournament throughout, and their failure to se core more prizes has nothing to do with the real facts, they brought back the belt? and that Is sufficient. TUia lAtrvtf It MrialiA In AnniMhi late members of the Heel Team, . and the splendid showing they made at Salisbury, both as contestants and that city. Cooing from Now Berne, nothing more or less could be ex pected from them. And now let there be no further mistakes in the future. Let os keep : the Belt. AN EDUCATIONAL BOOM. The efforts of the Trustees of the New Berne Academy, while meeting with fairly good success and encour agementfrom the citizens of this - city, yet their efforts do not promise to be crowned with a success com anensnrate with the object which they are attempting to attain and , which deserves success. There are booms of different kinds . which benefit a city, bnt no boom is more Important in immediate and future results, is such a producer of benefits to a community, as an ed- acational boom. An effort to give New Berne first-class Academy, a school that will be not merely a local one, bnt one which can draw from all of East ern North Carolina, is one which onght to commend itself to every citizen of this place, and receive the overwhelming endor sement on all 'sides. - An . educational boom possesses many elements which other booms tclt It does hot merely appeal to the financial side, but it does to the moral side of a community." It is an' op builder of the good, true and beau tiful. It does not enrich one person of claw, bnt enriches every person, directly or indirectly. , , Inaugurate an educational boom, and. it does not.interfere with exist ing industries,' bnt "gives an' im petus to tbenw ..j It is never a ;rval or competitor with any industry that has in it the welfare of a com munity. The idea that New Berne can support, and handsomely support, a first crass Academy,' Is not to be de nied. It is not, but will it? The city is offered the splendid opportunity of having a school for its children, and the children of this entire section, included. - The creation of a great Academy of learning in this city 'means' much more than a inure 'convenience for the parents of children,, it permits them to have their children at home, and saves them money, which will give them the opportunity of s-onding their children to school Ion I r than if they were sent to a dis tant school or college.. v'7; " The low tuition ( price offered by t'.o Trustees of the Aoademy does i t' Indicate ceap school,' for the standard will be a high one, as any one can ' easily understand by referricp; to its faculty, . . , . . , This is the time for every one to borne (o ; the , front and give New Berne's educational boom, as represented by its Academy, a good start. Hake it a glorious success from the very beginning, and the future will prove the correctness of those, who believed and assisted in giving it such a start. t ED1TOBIAL PABAQBAPHS. In its rush after political news J tho Kaleigh News-Observer, seems to have overlooked the circumstance that the Firemen of North Carolina held their annual Convention at Salisbury, last week. That much hnnted follow, the gold bug, while he has been kept busy- dodging the missiles fired at him, does not seem as yet to have taken to timber, bat remains : in the open.
