ESITOBIA& FARAQBAFHS Thii ia proving to be an unusually od political jear for the campaign r. : W;th so many political changes king place, the wildest f amor now y flnda plentj of believers. Candidate W. A. Gnthiie is going have a hard time to make his litical neace with the Biblical corder. According to late reports Judge issellandZeb Vance Walser are vadinsr Eastern North Carolina ith free silvei speeches. If the Statesville landmark is not ore careful in publishing original olitieal poetry, it will be- accused f grayer political backslidings than inting such poems. The statement going the rounds f the North Carolina press, that e banks of this State report only inety dollars in gold in their vaults onld indicate that free silver bad 'ready come to this State. The Newt-Observer $ attention is spectfuily called, since it has gone ito the business of reforming tli ress of. this State, to its city con omnorar. the Press- Visitor. If he JV.-0. will carefully read the damns of its contemporary it may ad several matters on political tatters which certainly, from the Y.-O. standard, demand reform. Vfter this, the State is before the yO. Let reform begin at home, " rriwelfle to PrlBclatle. We read every day in the daily arora about foeion" and "co- peratjon" between Republican emocrats and PopuliBts in many japes and forms. We are. unable a understand all this. To ns, prin 'ple is principle, and fusion "for lie sake of office" is nothing less 'tan a desertion of principle for the At of mouev. Wherever there is a issue upon which different par ies can agree, we see how it is pos ble for them to pool their forces u this issue, bnt when their is lothing in common between them, t is passing strange to ns how men an pool and combine in the name f. patriotism. And most of this "usioo is fixed np by men who are fter being bitched in the public rib. This selling out of conviction nd principle for the sake of office hi bits a species of citizenship hich is evil continually and bodes no good to onr country. A party hould stand upon principle and if needs be co down in defeat but ever sell out for the sake of the area and fishes. That there will be a time when this little world of ours will no longer exist there is not the least shadow of a doubt. But exactly how the humau race will perish and disappear from the face of the globe is the question that has interested the philosophers of all ages. ;.fb; 4 '& ' Borne profess to believe that the oceans are gradually encroaching on the land surface, and that eventually the last roan will bo drowned. Opposite to this is the muon-taiK- eJ-of theory that the water on the earth's surface is slowly drying up, the amount beintr appreciably less now than it was at the opening of the century. " The apostles of tuis unique theory say that if the dtying up process continuoi for a few thousand years longer the earty will become as ' arid as the moon and the last man will perish for want of water. Some believe that the earth, will fall to pieces; others, that a monster planet will plunge into toe sun. causing that great luminary to blaze up and burn to cinders the earth and the other planets in its train. There have been dozens of other theories, some of them equally cur- ona. aavanceu ov men who uae been making the subject a study, But the most remarkable solution of the question is tho opinion lately expressed bv a leading German me teorologist and astronomer. lie says that the internal Gres of the earth are rapidly dying out and that tbc sun is sure to burn out and become eold and dark. This, he says, is proven by the fact that ice is rapid ly accumulating at the poles of the earth and slowly creeping down to ward the temperate zones. Places visited by Eotzebue, Franklin,' Rose, Barry, Lyon and others during the first quarter of the present century, and pronounced by them as being free from ice during June, July and August, and are now covered . with several feet of the crystal deposit which is capped with snow through out the year. This certainly proves that the earth's glacial cones are rapidly and permanently enlarging, and that the old German apostle of the freeze-out theory has a basis for his calculations, to say the least. That Europe is on the borderland of another glacial epoch has been shown by Flaramarion, the great French speculative astronomer, During the last fifty years every kingdom, empire, republio and principality in that country, as well as those of Asia, has lost from 6 to 11 degrees in its mean annual tem perature. In France, Germany,' and Italythe northern limit of the growth of the vine is being steadily forced southward. In South America and south Africa similiar conditions are noted; at Bio de Janeiro thennual temperature has been steadily going down sinoe the date whon meteoro logical records were first kept in that city. The German authority just cited declares that this will go steadily on, with the effect of nar rowing down the habitable area of the globe. At last shivering hnman ity will all collect along the equator. Finally that too will become a region of ice and snow. , Then the time will come when the overcrowded hu man beings will all starve or be fro zen in a neap. - , Hade and Merit Maintains tbeeonfidenoe ol the people In Hood's Barsaparilla.
