Tboee newspapers in this State, tably the Kaleigh News-Observer, ,icli havo for months past been htihg their political battles, en ely ignoring North Carolina and at local matter the extreme lm rtance of keeping the State nnder a control of the Democratic party, we at the eleventh hour awakened the fact that North Carolina may ; carried by the Republicans. The Joubhal has tenaciously Id, and still holds, that the politi ,1 line of action Bhonld ran, first, ir jonr town or city, then in snc- seion, county, State and National ukets, and the Jouunal wants to 3 upon record in this campaign as be g persistently the advocate of first iving North Carolina for the Dem- sratio party. : It needs no argument to show that ! the' Democrats had first made lid their county tickets, the State "cket would naturally follow, and hen the National ticket, all being oted for by Democrats who would ud no political disturbance for vot- g everything straight. Now that the polls are within ght, and tbe dangers of Repnbli m victory begin to look possible, here is going ont from certain Democratic newspapers cries of "fraud registration" and "nigger rale.""':;;';- v 'k ' Both of these Bhonld be carefully onsidered. If there is any repa ration frauds there will be no ques ion that they can be discovered and tamped out. Th rj cannot bo any dispute on this point. Tbe dispatches tell of ''race riots' in Person county, inflammatory peeches being made to negro an liences, who incited thereby, made assaults upon white men. "Race riots" as a rule are largely influen ced by local conditions, and such a disturbance in Person county must be considered from a local stand point, and it is unjust and unfair to make Person county represent the whole ot North Carolina. But aside from this, how shall the home political issue be fought daring the few remaining days of the campaign? Will cries of "fraud registration" and "race riots" prove vote catchers?. Believing in and contending for Democratic rule in North Carolina, the Journal has ever demanded for local organization along lines of principle, for a careful considera tion of, and preservation of party precedent of rule and good home government nnder which the people of this State have been safe and prospered. The Journal desires no credit for persevering in its demands to look to North Carolina, first, it las believed in this coarse, and now within sight of the polls, it sees that its course was right. Now that tbe end has come, and the cries abovo noted are given ont by newspapers , which have been ;)euocbatio on affairs outbids of orth Carolina, and have passed by cal issues, will it sare the State to ry at this hour of the campaign, fraud" and "nigger?" Down "with frauds and riots I ay t ) pnnishmont with all such in x, but let not the political cam-1 go. in North Carolina be finished ting such lines. - Th Ideal Panacea. .Tamet L, Frtnci. The fusion business has .at last been settled, f lietDemocratiocom. mittre in its great' deaire to elect Bryan and save the State from Rus- sellism and negro rule offered ..the Populists fusion throughout. Fas- sion on the Bryan ticket wa accept ed; fusion on the State ticket was rejected. Tbe Democrats have done everything th.it ooald be ajked of them. They offored to fuse so as to save the Stato Now the respon sibility rests on our Populist friends. If Russoli slionld be elected,- and the heel of tbe tyrant shall be placed upon the people of North Carolina, and negro rule shall prevail in our midst, tlio blame cannot be p accd on tho Democratic party. Concord Times. iromer. It Goc. Tho Populist party may now be put dowu eqmiroly for gold and spoils, sinco tliey decline to work together with tho Democrats to elect silver uiou to Congroje, and hold fast to their gold bug allies. There will he hosts of Populists who will not swallow tho bitter dose. Washington Gazette. : Office JnatlBeenll Thins;. And ou what grounds do the Pop ulist leaders justify their., fusion with Republicans in North Caro lina? Tney -wanted oflice, and to ease their conscience and fool the people adopted the old Raoienl cry of election frauds. It was claimed that it was necessary to fuse with Republicans to get fair elections. Washington Messenger. Tbe Popnllnl Kplrlt. . Up to a week ago the Democratic State Committeo and the editor of the State organ were on their knees humbly begging tbe Popnlist State Committee for "fusion" on the State ticket. Tho "unholy alliance" was declined. Now tho State organ and its gang are furiously abusing and villifying the Populist as they did in '94. Self-respecting Populists will resent it now, as they did then, by voting against every Democrat. Edenton North Carolinian. So Time for Over Ceafldea.ee. But let us not be too confident.
