Tha twenty-second annual report of the New York Society f r the ; Preyeution of Cruelty to Children sets forth the effects of the new journalism upon the minds of chil dren. Among other things, Tresi dent. Gerry says: '.aOliilil aviminala aa Siinrrflainrr in this community. Notwithstanding all the humane, legal, and religious influences at work, this unpleasant fact cannot be denied. In the lira place, the class of child criminals seems to have entirely changed. . The larger number are those of ie cently arrived foreigners, whese poverty and lack of intelligent edu cation prevent tnem giving mat care to the children, which the hit ter tequire. Many of these children are bright, intelligent, and preco cious; they arc ready to seize upon whatever may be placed iir their way in the form of literature and to shape their own action according ly. JFbey soon learn to read, and then cornea the first cause of their train- inm in virto tvliur irk u tr wall ki nu 3 lov ' vicious journalism. Lurid stones of crime, illustrated by vivid pictures representing criminals in duriug and attractive attitudes; descriptions of criminals arrested for gross im moralities with the like pictorirl illustrations; narratives of thesiymtt w.nAciallr nf rliililrci cli:ir rpil with crime, where ull the details are elaborated with the greatest care, with their pictures often of a sa'a cious charaoter, mitkes a deep seated and .deep-rooted impression. Any oue convorsiug with children held for crime may soon learn whence the suggestions of criino are derived. Thoy are only too ready to talk on the subject, and frequently to com pare their exploits witli those chron icled in these newspaper. The decent part of the community eiclude such vile poison from their households, but it is grrudily read and devoured by the uuediiciitel classes, anu this daily dose of poison poured in the minds of the young can be and is productive of but one result. Fnless th& poison is suti pressed the number of criminal children must and will increase. Dime novels are bad enough, but the criminal news costs almost noth ing to purchase. It is the enemy ol the human iace, and especially of the poor and Ignorant. The intelligent neither read nor boleivc it. What a fearful arraignment this of the New York World and Jour- sal, which are running a neck and neck race for the badge of infamy in modern journalism! . What fearful responsibility a newspaper takes ppon itself when it lends its columns, from day to day, to a class of matter of which it can be said by a student of child-life, as Mr. Qerry, that is corrupting the hearts and minds of children and educating, them for lives of vice and crime.' It were better for the publisher of such a paper that he should have a mill-stone .hanged about hi neck and be cast into the midst of the sea. Charlotte Observer.
