' Ex-Chief Justice Shepherd has been retained by Attorney General Wnlser to appear for him as special counsel in the suit of the Southern Railway about the lease of the N. C. R. R. The Attorney General will vindicate his right to bring certain suits in his discretion as repre senting the sovereignty of the State and to allow the Governor to present through him nil questions as to validity of the lease except the charge of fraud hy the directors. The receipts at the Raleigh postofflce for fiscal year ending April 8, 1807, were 33,583.19. In 1884 they were $28,000 and have increased $2,000 every year since. C Senator Prltch- ard has given notice that he will offer the following amendment to the Dingle) tariff bill: Removing from the free list ore as pyrites or siimhurct of iron hi ltf natural state, and making it dutiable at 3.25 per ton; removing emery ore from the free list and making it dutiable at 1 cents ner pound; also imposing a similai duty on emery grain, making all logt dutiable at the rate of $3 per 1,000 feet; imposing a duty of 2 cents per pound on raw cotton; llxing a specific duty of ( cents per pound on manazite, and instcai f the ad valorem, as now provided, In creasing the duty of kuolili io a $2 tn finer ton.
