The week ends with railway securities and cereals at top prices. Increased carniugs is the feauturc in railway securities. Sugar trust is erratic with a tendency to lower prices on the expectation that the Dingley schedulo may bo adopted. Cotton declined on realizing by Liver pool and the reports from different points of the drought being broken by good showers. We believe the reaction Is only tem porary, and look for further advance, Argentine and Liverpool buying wheat, caused a further advance of nearly two cents over yesterday's close. C, July 17. ( Judge Purnell arrived this morning otn Asheville and held a rctular term f the IT. 8. district court, at which a number of accounts were approved. He also received the bond of J. B. Fortune as clerk of the court and administered the oath of office to him. District attor ney Aycock made the motion. Judge Purnell also beard motion for a receiver for the Cumberland Hills, in the case against it by the Eastern Building and Loan Association of Syracuse, N. There are a great many parties de fendant. The Judge says he has notified clerk Shaw of the Court at Wilmington that he will not he removed or disturbed. The Judge will be at Asheville three weeks longer, returning there Monday to hear the great case of Scarfc vs. the Western Land Company, involving title to over 70,000 acres of hind in Buncombe, McDowell and Burke counties. The errant for this land was issued in 1705 to Samuel Tate. The railway commissioners say no de cision is arrived at lejardlng the rato of valuation of railways, and that none will be reached until the end of next week during which time the commission will be in session at Round Knob, on the Western N. In the mountain counties it is excellent. Fine samples of tobacco of this year's growth are coming in. The outlook is good. The dry and very hot weather did some damage. Rains after July 7 have unquestionably improved all crops and raises tho per centago of condition above those given yesterday in the Agricultural Depart ment's July report. Most of the returns on which that report was based were dates prior to July 7. Many persons elected as judges and registrars of election decline to serve for the public school tax election August 10. Opposition to the election increases dully in many sections and is being formed. Airy on the belief that he was tho murderer of Mrs. Springs at Littleton has proved his in nocense and is at liberty. The Beaboard Air- Line it ia now de clared is making complete arrangements to build from Rutherfordton to Bristol, via Asheville, Burnsvllle, and Cranberry. Six white men lynched Roberts Cham bers near Cranberry in Mitchell county are on trial in McDowell county for that crime. Under the new law persons ac cused of lynching must be tried in a county other than the one in which the crime was committed. The capital officials attempted to evade responsibility lor removing all the vet eran negro employes and putting In their places some who are partlsians. But the sttemot has failed.
