The final vote having been cast, and the Dinfiley Tariff bill having become a law, must of conrse pro voke adverse criticism from all political opponents of the present administration. The new law, from a political standpoint, is condemned 'as one created solely in the interests and in behalf of monopoly.' - Its schedules are Slid to be in telligible to the beneficiares of them, not to the ordinary citizen, and on this account the bill is pronounced vicious and iniquitous in character. But perhapB the harshest criticism against the new tariff bill is that it was passed over a minority who could not prevent its becoming a law. To the practical business man, to the laborer and to tho farmer, these nice and distinctive points are ot really small concern. What do they care for the reason ings of political wiseacres, who must find fault? What is the real situ ation to the business man, laborer and farmer, so far as the tariff con cerns them, if it is not one which affects their every day affairs? The business community of the country wants to see settled condi tions; it wants as little legislation as possible, and what legislation is done, it wants definitely deter mined. An important factor in the new tariff law, and one which will not find any argument against it, is that it will produce sufficient rev enue to maintain the govern ment, ana meet an us eipenai turn . From this point alone, the effect is most assuring to the trade of the country,; for there can be no strin gency with the government, no bond isjnes to make good a deficit in its The cry of a tariff shaped in the interests of a privileged few, is one that has good political effect, be cause it need not be explained by those using it, and the cry against the rich is one made without con sideration or thought, and done for political effect, solely, 6' J " J not give protection to every person, lint mtI.iIa thA I linn av hill m . tt will not its protective features In a measure govern the entire country, and while a few may receive tool greatest direct benefits, will not trade in general be favorably affect ed by the certainty that the govern' ment has an income fully sufficient to meet all of its obligations ? Politically considered, the Repub lican party will be held responsible for whatever may result from the new tariff measures, and there will be no dispute over this issue. The Dingley tariff bill is now a law, and the country can feel cer tain that its creators will make it effective to the best of their abilities whatever its final outcome will oe, or however adversey it may be criti cised by its enemies. The time for criticism is past, and results will tell whether the Dingley bill is what its frionds or enemies claim it to be. Cans Eiaaey aai Blaiier TreakUs. Miss "Caddie Eoonce and Miss Sal lie Benson are yisiting Mr. C. T. Fescue's family atFowle. Miss Eldie Andrews,' who lives near Trenton, is visiting at Mrs. Sylvanns Barkers. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Midyett of Brown Sonnd are visiting at 0. 0, Henderson's. Mr. Gnnn Andrews and Mr. Page of Beaver Oreek township brought to Trenton two fine water melons. Mr.' Andrew's . melon : tipped the scales at 33 1-3 lbs. while Mr. Page's went to 34 lbs. : Wo are glad to note that Mrs. S. Barker, who has been quite sick for several days, is getting well again. 1). W. Whitaker of the News took a trip to Einston. Monday on business. Fish carts are visiting Trenton quite often now haying had foil r here during the past week. ;" J P. Brogden is repairing the Trenton mills putting in new posts. Mr. Barker has his aa mill in readiness to saw lumber and will in a few days have the grist mill ready for grinding. . v ' Mrs. Betsy Willis, relict of the late Asa Willis, died t the home of her son near Trenton Sunday even ing last, aged between 55 and CO years, leaving some grown sons and daughters to mourn their loss. Cotton is doing well, balling np nicely, but the weed is not as large as it was last year at this time, but bids fair to make a fair yield. The late rains have improved corn won derfully. The busy season is fast approaching .whon the fleecy staple will bo rolling in. . Money will be here then and tho 5 10 and 20 dollar bills will be carried around seeking to get change. Will not our nier chants reoollect the past and be in readiness to cash checks and change hall the bills as fast as presented and thereby seoure a full trade? Don't let any farmer fail to trade with yon because you can't change his money. Why don't the owners of town lots iuTrenton build a few more store, buildings here? During the past week two gentlemen were here looking around to get houses to start business in. Don't be afraid tbat they will not be occupied, for Tren ton is now on the eve of a healthy boom. Whenever a town starts np in business the Jews can scent it from afar. Are they not now mov ing in here getting ready to meet it? -The citisena of Trenton in old times used to say tbat Trenton was then at its best and used to sit down and never lend a helping hand to build the town np. Used to be con tent to have their goods shipped here in flats that took a week to make a trip to New Berne and back again. They hauled tbe products of the farms in carts and wagons and were supremely content in so doing. But the Government unlocked the great barrier, cleared the Trent of logs hnd snags np to Trenton. What a change, steamers commenced ran ning up here, instead of the old tin bugle of old, tbe sound of the steam whistle was heard and daring the fall season on some days the sale of bale cotton has been over two ban dred bales, whereas before this, who ever heard of bale of cotton being sold in Trenton ? Now one store here In fall season soils more good than every one did in five years dur ing the old flat boat times. Why not then offer to all good citizens all the inducements joo can, sell them town lots, don't keep op the old fogey way of getting a. town lot' to plant cotton in. Recollect the good buildings' that have "sprang up around the ooporate limits, recollect that lots can be purchased above town and tbe town may move out above you.
