There were three brilliantly illu minated cars coupled together. A trass band played as the cats sped along the track. Col. P. H. Lybrook of Winston has accepted the chief Marsha'ship of the State Fair in October. Governor Russell and quite a large party will go on August 14th to Old Point Virginia Beach, Ocean View and all the resorts in that vicinity. Treasurer Wortli says that only J of the property in the State is taxed. His lea seems to-be to make corporations pay taxes on their property nt full cash value, while lands do- not pay taxej on over 4 of the actual value. Twenty convicts were today fent to dig 000 car loads of gravel for the S. A. I,, near Carthage. ' Of course every one is gazing sunward today ae tno partial eclipse ot uio sun. Fortunately there is a cloudless sky and the shadowing of the God of Day is dis tinctly seen. N. C. Washington, July 28. Two filibuster ing expeditions are suspected to bo pre. paring to leave Wilmington, N. C. and the federal authorities, in pursuance of the government's policy to prevent Biich departures from the United States, will take steps to intercept them. The infor mation comes to the State Department from the Snanish minister, whose spies and ffetectives along tho Southern sea board are most energetic and nlcitand have defeated many plans of the Cuban insurgents to secure munitions of war. ' The two vessels under suspicion arc the schooner John D. Long and the tug Alex. Jones, both now at Wilmington, It is said their movements have been sus picious of late, and spies report that a large expedition will soon sail for Cuba with supplies unless the authorities pre vent it. Remembering the tricks played by the Dauntless in decoying the warships to a chase nt sea only to allow time for some expedition to slip away, the authorities are on guard and do not propose to leave unprotected the far Southern coast to watch supposed fillibusters who may be playing the same ti it k. This is the time, however, when the Cubans should receive substantial aid if they hope to continue a successful cam paign this autumn. The rainy season is drawing to a close, and hostilities may soon begin a;rnin. iho cry ot the insur gents, their representatives here say, is still for arms and ammunition. THE MARKETS.
