The results of the several con tests in the annual State Firemen's Tour nament, which has just ended, has again demonstrated the superiority of the New Berne Fire Department over all others, in those contests where still, endurance and know ledee of what was necessary to be done quickly, was concerned. Again the Championship Belt, for the third time woo, comis to New Berne. Only those who trained and strug gled for this prize can appreciate the efforts made to retain this belt in New Berne, on the part of the New Berne boys, and the efforts on the part of outside contestants to wrest it from its holders. The official returns show that the belt was certain to come to this city, - for the two rael teams of New Berne ran first and second for it in the contest. In the other contests, the New Berne fire laddies have borne dis tinguished parts. From the en trance into Favetteville, until its leaving, the Fire Department of this city was the center of attrac tion, and bore itself so as to war rant all the praise passed upon it, From parade to closine race, the fire laddies of New Borne took important parts, and it is with sat isfaction that every New Bernian notes the honor? paid to its repre sentatives. It is most n d te worthy that New Berne in nearly every contest was not satisfied to enter one winning team, but two, showing an abun dance of athletic material, which if concentrated into one team ought to have captured every first prize offered at the tournament. The interest in the Tournament contests has been an absorbing topic of conversation in this city for weeks, and its culmination was reached in the past few days, when the results of t':ese contests were known. New 'Berne teams could not have lost, for they felt that the eyes of every man, woman and child at home were npon them, and their success was imperative. .Nobly has every representative maintained the trust and confidence placed in him, and New Berne is proud of its Fire Laddies, Long may New Berne continue the Champion City ! "There's no use of expecting any thing else," said the misanthrope who had been persuaded to go on a pionio with his family. "Human nature is going to be inconsistent, and that's all there it to it. You'll merely waste your time trying to make it any different." , . 'What's the matter now?'' asked his wife. : "Hasn't the weather been good? And didn't people let yon alone, so as to give yon nothing to grumble about?" "Oh, yea. Bat did yon notice the singing aa we got back?" , , . Yea. ' As far as quality was concerned, the music may have been as good as any opera you'd pay five dollars a seat to go to sleep at. But when it comes to a question of propriety, all it did was to remind me of the downright and unalterable perversene&s of this human race. When people get back from a trip to Europe they don't do anything but hustle around to get their lug- gago through the custom bouse and procure a carriage to tako them to a hotel, where tnev can rest. But when they come home from an ex cursion a mile and a half out of town, they can't be satisfied unless they wake up the whole country singing "Home Again, Home Again, From a Foreign Shore!" ' Uustav Eobbe has an article entitled "Steering Without a Compass" in tit Nicholas. Mr. Kobbe sajs: i . The degree of A. B. is not confined to college graduates. Aboard ship it means "able bodied" seaman. , . Every nautical "A. B." knows bow to "box the compass" and bow to steer by it, bnt you will be surprised to learn that no good helmsman will steer by a compass unless all other things fail him. Among thoas "other things" are the borison, the tttad, the wake of the ship, the stars, the soundings aud the line of the surf when ruuning along the coast And so the ablebodied seaman, when a greenhorn takes his trick at the wheel, hands over the helm to him with this caution, "Keep your bead out ot the binnacle." I am speaking ot sailiug vessels. Steamers, especially those that travel on regular routes, steer by compasa. They run their courses" Horn point to point from lighthouse to lighthouse, light. hip, day mark, bnoy, bell or log whis tle. In thick weather they know, tox ins wind aud tide into consideration, bow long they should stand, on eacn course and try never to pass the "sig nal" ot the end of it When they have seen or heard that signal, they start on the next ' 'run" or course. This is called 'running the time and distance." I have gone into Halifax on a steamer that met with thick fog from Cope Cod down. One morning the captain said to me: We ought to pick npSambro in half an hour." i a Surely enongb, about half 'an hour later we heard, through the fog, a can non shot, the distinguishing fog signal of the Sombro light station on the Nova Sootian coast Real sailors the Jack tars that man sailing Teasels actually prefer, as I have said, to steer by signs rather than by compass, aud there are times when the steamer pilots have to. Carton's Advice. The other day, as I was clinging a strap of a Lexington avenue car, savs a writer in the christian Advocate, two ladies sat near me, and as one opened her portemonnaie pay her fare a scrap ef paper which was pasted to the leather was disclosed. Is that your shopping list?" asked the other; "it doesn't look ike a long one." No," was the reply: "it is not the list, but it is what keeps the list from being a lone one," and she read: 'lie who buys what he does not need will soon need what he. can not buy." "What a capital guardian of you capital! You must let me copy that for my leaky parse. Who wrote it?" "I don't know, bnt I wish I did for he has saved many a dollar from lightly rolling from my hands since I put here." I was intensely interested in the conversation, for at that very mo ment there lay iu my note book scrap which I would have brought forth but for the fact that my own corner was reached. I publish it, for it the which it contains were assimilated many a pocket book would remai a pocket book: Ws are ruioed, not by what wt really want, bnt by what we tbink we do; therefore, never go abroad in search of your wants. It they be ra wants, tbey will come boms search of yon; for he that buys what be does not want, will soon want what he cannot buy." troth aaatfciaf f Knew.
