Meeting.
Raleigh, August 7. The State Super
intendent of Public Instruction has Issued
the following:
'To the Teachers and Friends of Public
Schools: I call upon you as patriotic
citizens of North Carolina to go to the
polls on next Tuesday and see that all
may have an opportunity to vote 'for
schools' at your respective voting pre
cincts. If the County Commissioners of
your county have not prepared and dis
tributed ballots, as the law directs them,
you can write ballots with the words 'for
schools' on paper, and these will do as
well as the printed ballots. Next Tues
day will be a memorable day in the edu
cational history of our State. What
shall the record bef Will you help to
make the record one over which you will
have reason to rejoice? I trust you will
do your duty on this important day."
The Supreme Court gives notice that
September 27th, it will examine appli
cants for attorneys' licenses. The class
will be a very large one.
Hon. John W. Daniel of Virginia and
family are at Southport, Ilia family will
remain a month.
This county suffers $3,000 loss by the
burning of the barn and stable at the
County Ilome. Several horses and mules
and nine bags and all the funning imple
ments were burned.
The State Auditor says that if the new
ly-created State Board of Tax Equaliza
tion is to do nothing, he does not think
it should use the appropriation specially
made.
In this section rain is needed by all
crops, save cotton. Rain has fallen at
many places during the past twenty-four
hours.
The groat "yearly meeting" of the
Friends, or Quakers, is in progress at
High Point. Sunday ten thousand peo
ple will gather there..
GOOD REPORTS.
Don nnd Brndetreet Say tbAt Baal
tu le Improving.
New York, August 6. R. G. Dun's
Weekly Review of Trade says:
Four years ago, August S, 1803, the
first number of Dun's Review was issued
with fuilures in that month amounting to
over $00,000,000 while in the month just
closd, failures have been only $7,117,727
the smallest in any month since 1892,
The pessimists who prophecied reports of
gain fictitious and misrepresenting have
grown weary of their dismal song and
begin to look for better days.
Last month was the first for four years
in which tho volume of business reached
by the clearing house, was larger than
In the same month of 1893 and dispatch'
ea from all parts of the country given
this week show a gratifying improve
ment. This is partly due to a large yield
of wheat and prices, though the crop is
probably notes large nor are prices thus
far as high as high as in 1893, but of cot
ton the price is higher and the yield
probably larger than In that year. Other
farm products are realizing good prices
and the possible decline In yield of corn
may help to market the enormous sur
plus brought over from last year,
Bradstreet sayst
General trade, shows the most tro
nounced gains this week at Chicago, St,
Louis and Galveston. The feeling of con
fidence that general business is to ira
prove in the early aulaimn Is marked at
these cities, and purchases of dry goods
olothlng, shoes and other staples have
increased heavily and are followed by a
disposition to crowd price up.
The movement of general merchandise
throughout the country Is unquestionably
larger than last week, cotton goods and
woollen industries are better off, and the
stagnation In iron and steel has given
way to a growing Inquiry and increasing
output. But more significant still Is the
extraordinary expansion In bank clear
ings thir week and last month.
As to wheat (notwithstanding the re
action In September pptlon) wheat, flour,
pork. laroVPaclfio Coast hops, sugar, soft
cotton and tea. There la a S per cent.
gala In Bessemer pig and manufacturers
decline orders for future delivery at cut
quotations. In fact, our predicted revival
In Iron and steel has appeared.

Washington, August 6 The reports
from Ohio that President McKinley is
likely to enter the campaign in that State
and make a stumping tour, Bpeaking
from the rear platform of a car, are not
believed in Washington. In fact, close
friends of the President say that lie has
no idea of going to the State to engage
in the pending campaign. Nor did he
think he would make any speeches in the
Stato this fall, excepting the address
before his old regimental association, the
23d Ohio.
