There has been no repetition of the scenes which on Friday led to the (hoot ing dowa of striker by deputies, led by Slierld Martin, near the town of Lattl mer, a few miles from tlsilcton. Com plete lists of the victims show that twenty-one were killed and forty were wounded by the deputies. There is strong reason to fear a con flict between the strikers and the military t imorrow, and there Is an Indication that from Ave to seven thousand more miner will join the malcontents. The statements by Sheriff Martin that be read the riot act to Ihe striker and that was struck and knocked down be fore the firing bcjrsn are denied by the strikers. Pout Townsend, Wash., September 12 The steamer South Coast, which left St. Michael's September 1, arrived here yesterday, bringing twenty-seen pas sengers from Dawson Citp The amount of gold brought down on the vessel is believed to lie ubout $350,000. The returned miuers were not disposed to talk of their fortunes, but J. P. Light, of Chicago, admitted having accumulated $18,000 in dust and nuggets during two years' stay in the gold fields. The steamer City of Seattle arrived to day, five days from Skaguay. Among her passengers ure twelve men who started for the Klondike, but failed to cross the pass, A. C. Warner, of Seattle, says the Skaguay pass is closed for the season, but that many are still flourisliingiiround in the mud in a vain attempt to get through. The first fourteen miles of the trail from Skaguay Beach is strewn with the bodies of 000 horses. Eleven saloons and three dance hulls are doiui; business at Skaguay. Latest News Ileum. Argentina has taken steps to retaliate upou the United States for supposed dis crimination in the new tariff. A cable gram to this effect was received at the State Department. Articles of incorporation have been filed with the Secretary of State for the Yukon Railroad Company, which is cap italized at $000,000, for the purpose of building a railroad in Alaska from Ska guay over the White Pass in the Chilkoot mountains to the head of Lake Bennett. Gen. Filzhugh Lee, United States consul-general at Havana, is in Wash ington. It Is his Intention to remain here for several days, and ho will prob ably confer with the President us well as with Assistant Secretary Day about Cuban affairs before he goes to his home in Virginia. There was a sharp recovery in silver of penny, to 25 pence, in London, and one cent, to 55 cents, in New York. This was due to the decision of the Bunk of England authorities to hold one-fifth of the bank's reserve in silver.
