At one of the churches where a revival is going on, a party of ladies and gentlemen went to the doors, rather late, and were told that no ono else could en ter unless upon a case of emergency for the congregation could not be disturbed. Tbe question was asked of the Secre tary of State whether land grants in this State carry with them mineral rights and he said tbat they did. Washington, D. 0 Sept. 27. Tliere has been so much talk about the monetary conference now in session in Washington, as a result of authority con ferred by the convention which met in Indianapolis, last January, and because Congress did not see tit to adopt the President's recommendation that he be authorized to appoint an official com mission to report to Congress needed changes in our monetary spstein, and its objects and intentions, that ex-Senator Edmonds, the chairman of the Cominis sion, bas made a statement on the sub iect. He says the Commission has no authority and purposes to exercise none; that it is composed of private citizens, who of their own will and at their own xpense have come together for the pur pose of discussing our currency system und the laws bearing thereon, with view to suggesting to Congress, through their right of petition, any changes which they may, after careful consideration, think would be beneficial. Notwith standing ihi explanation, the Commis sion is still criticized, especially by the silver men, who declare ttat it exists for no other purpose than to keep silver down. So far the meetings of the Com mission have been held behind closed doors. Having sent a company of U. S. sold icrs to St. Michaels, Alaska, to help guard the property of gold hunters there and to assist in maintaining law and order, the administration is now considering a re quest to establish a permanent Naval patrol on the Yukon river. These things together with ordering reindeer owned by the govcinmcnt to be taken to St, Michaels to be used, if necessary, during the winter to transport food to Dawson City, reminds one that upon occasion ours is a very paternal sort of govern ment. Mr. John Q. Woods, the Kentucky man who was denied an injunction to prevent his removal from the Louisville Post Office, by Judge Cox, has abandoned the idea of carrying the case to the U. 8, Supreme Court, but will make a personal appeal to President McKinlcy. Jus what he can expect from such an appeal is not altogether clear. The President might think Just as Mr. Woods does, but tbat won't help his case any, as the President, as well aa the humblest cltl sen, must obey the decision of a- court New Goods si , , n r Three Drawer Sewing Machine For $20, ' and glv. yon a B Tear Guarantee' NOW "LIST EN I New Bern Is the place to sell your lobaoca, and Whltty's la lh. place to buy your Hardware.
