Senator Daniel addressed a powerful argument in favor of the Bell company, against the low rate and ridiculing the Inter-State company left for home today. The State charters the Railway and Street Car Indicator company of Eden ton, for 30 years, H. A. Donuan, W. S. Sumnierrill and B. E. Byrd incorpora tes, (o make 'lie indicators and sell patent lights. The Superintendent of Die penitentiary today turned over to the treasury $1)0.74 of penitentiary earnings. He says that next Monday there will be a regular exodus from the penitentiary to the cotton farms, lent ing there only those persons who lire sick. It is as he says, "the first cleaning out the penitentiary has ever had," Gov. Russell appoints W. C. Douglas and John W. Hinsdale his consul in the injunction case of the Western Union Telegraph company to prevent the State from enforcing the 15 cent message rate- This is the case which is to come, up he- fore Judge Himontou at Wilmington. The September revenue collections in this district were the largest, with one exception, during Collector Simmons term of ollieo, They were, whiskey 13,8r)8; cigars and "cigarettes $25,808, tobacco $80,859; total $122,002. . Last night a party of ladies and gentle men from this city went to the insane asy lum to attend one of the semi-weekly dances given the patients. Two Mormon preachers or elders ar rived here today and will preach tomor row in the city hall. They were specially interviewed and said: "Our number now at work in this State has been increased to 40. Ezra C. Robinson is our presi- dent or presiding elder. He has no head- quarters, but spends his time visiting the elders. lie is president of what we know as the North Carolina Conference. We have about 400 members In the State. We have a church building and quite a congregation at Cameron. We are doing a gold deal of work in Wayne county. The highest was 93, the lowest 48. The rainfall was only 70 hundredths of an Inch, while the September average for the past 11 years is I. IS inches. Special to Journal. Raleigh, N. C. October 8. Tue State will borrow fifty convicts from Wake couuty to pick entton on the Roanoke Farms, and later will give the county the use of that many or more of the State convicts for road work. Cotton. Liverpool stock is only 897,000 bales, of which 207,000 is American. Last year it was 412,000 and 306,000 bales Ameri can, lheir market and ours continues dull and sluggish and unsatisfactory and holders are compelled to exhibit patieucc under circumstances of unusual apparent difficulties and their only comfort is the strongest statistical statement of foreign and domestic features that was ever known. Doubtless the bulk of cotton crop will be picked by October 15th, now only a fortnight ahead, and the date of frosts in the cotton belt varies from October 8th forward. The investor in cotton therefore has comparatively a short time to wait for improved condi tions. The property in the meantime is as good as a corner lot in a growing town. El Reno, Oklu., October 1 Bandits robbed the south-bound Rock Island pas senger train aud all its passengers at 11 o'clock this forenoon at siding No, 1. about five miles south of Minco, in the Indian Territory. The trainmen were completely sur prised and they were not prepared to offer any resistance when live masked men came up to them at the lonely sil ing. The place is uninhabited, and the only persons in the vicinity at the time were four section men. These men ged the train, the robbers having compelled them to (In so.
