Entered at the Post Office, New Berne, N. C. as second class matter. New Berne, N.C Oct., 15, 1897. "CONTENTION" AND "INJUSTICE" The Charlotte Observer iu refer ring to an Editorial which appeared in these columns last week, "Con tentions Among Brethren," says that the Journal did that paper an injustice in classifying it among Bach brethern, and says the Jour nal is querulous when it said the Observer had "occasional lapses into its previous position of sound moneyism." And further the Observer says it "has never wavered for an inBtant from the position it took on the money question when that question became acute, and never has striven to make amends for its advocacy of the sound currency advocated by Jefferson, Jackson, Tililon and Cleveland." Without wishing or seeking to be "querulous" or contentions, the Journal must say that this latter statement of the Observer' would be a settler to any one less familiar with the Observers position d ur ine: the last two years, than the Journal is. The above statement implies that the Observer thinks it occupies the same position on sound money today as it did the day before the Chicago platform was announced. Its Editor may have the same iu dividual opinion, but the columns of the Observer since the Chicago Convention have never bristled foi the principles of sound money, as they previously did. And this very complaint of the Observer's against the Journal's accusation, indicates the desire our esteemed contemporary has to square itself by refuting the accusation that any such amends were nesessary. But as the Observer wants noth ing said which might prove offensive about the money question, the Journal will not go further along this line at present. Upon the question of State fusion, Democrats with Populists, the Observer's position is unsullied and unquestioned. There can be no question as to the matter of principle involved in this question of Democratic-Popu list fusion. There is no Democratic principle which can for a moment justify it, no party expediency to warrant it. Every tenet of Democratic faith is against Populism, and no true Democrat but will abhor the con templation of seeking a union with Populists by bis party. When Democracy can only be up held by fusion with Populism, then let Democracy perish. And no more stalwart advocate of this principle can be found than the Charlotte Observer, and the Jour nal gladly acknowledges it. $100 Reward $100.
