THAT NEUSB JUVEB BRIDGE IC
' CATION. .
The prolonged hearing givon by
' the County Commissioners, end the
discussions which bare taken place
over the question ot the location of
the Nome River bridge would indi
cate that its location was a matter
of more importance than its con-
struction. - ; .
In passing upon the suitable loca
tion for this bridge, the Countj
Commissioner! in deciding upon
' Union street as the best point for
the Western or Ne Kerne terminus
ot the bridge, gave very c ireful at
tendon to the several things to be
considered, the wants of the county
people, the a-.Tan ages to New
Berne, the cost of construction, it
disadvantages to navigation, and any
business interest which might be
affected by its proximity.
The opposition to tl.e location at
Union street, etems to bt based
upon . the assertion that a bridge
built at the point designated would
interfere with tho paseago of Loats
going to load or unload at the linn
ber mills aud railroad docks which
are situated above Union street.
The prccwe interference outs'uV
of lb 3 possible momentary delay at
the bridge, is hard to maintain.. In
the vicinity of the proposed, bridge
site there are no interests, coiiiinar-
cial or otherwise, whiuh the bridge
will obstruct. The majority of the
vessel men s ty the bridge offers no
special obstruction to navigation,
any more than any bridge does, for
all bridges are an abhorrence to ves
ee! men.
Id deference to the entire com
munity, every interest has bad a
voice in this bridge matter, aud tbe
opposition, very small one, offers
nothing of sufficient or vital impor
tance to make any change necessary
in the point already selected by tbe
' County Commissioneti. "-'
Every argument favoring a change
' from Union street has had a per
aonal interest, rather than a, com
; inanity interest behind it, and there
re not enough of these personal in
terests to counterbalance in any
degree the community ' interests
which- would be adversely affected
bra change of location.
The bridge at Union street gives
New Berne a direct country com
munication which means many
thousands of dollars more trade
very year to the merchants of this
city, it in this way benefits the tax
payers who must pay almost the
entire cost of construction and
maintenance of the bridge, it affords
the county people the best and
easiest way ot gotting to their coun
ty teat; and a bridge at Union street
means a bridge which'can be built
aud maintained cheaper than one
Can be constructed at any other
point on the river.
la fact unless a bridge can bo
built at tho point selected by the
county commissioners, Union street,
there is no use of the taxpayers
being put to the expense of having
a bridge built where they do not
want it, and where it benefits no
community interest

"i'oa may talk about your brief
courtships and marriages on short no
tice," said Captain Arm Cardwell ouce,
but I think I ouce witnessed the quick -it
made match on record. I was run
ning as a conductor between Russell
villa end Owensboro, as I did for many
yean, and on a trip in the winter of
1881 1 Koi a pretty country gin passen
ger at a little flag station son til of Cen
tral City about IMS a. m. A few miles
farther on at another small station a
big strapping looking farmer, dressed
in brown jeans, with his trousers rock
ed in his tall boots, got on my train.
The fellow hadn't opened the ear door
till he spied the rustic lass, and before
he took bis seat in front of the girl he
had smiled at her.
"I punched fait ticket, went in the
smoking car, and on my return to the
regular passenger coach found tbe Green
river tiller of tbe soil sitting in tbe
same scat with the maiden, chatting
with her as if he bad known her since
birth. In S3 minutes after they had
first met the fellow called me to him
and said; 'See here, podner, we want
to get hitched. I hain't knowed Mirinda
Jane here but 80 minutes, but we both
like, an she's willin an so'ni L Whur's

them on to Owensboro, and the bappy
bridegroom and his blushing other half
were passengers back on my train that
afternoon. For hurry np nuptials it
does strike me that these ought to have
the cake and other special prizes offered
for quick yeast love matches." Louis

The father of Eugene Sue was a phy-
Bioian.witli exalted patients all over
Europe, who sent him the choicest
wines. The emperor of Austria, for in
stance, had contribntcd tokay, the king
of Prussia rare bock, Queen Christina
of Spain priceless alicaute, Prince Met
ternicb genuine cachet d'or, and so on.
The whole was kept in a large iron cup
board in the study of tbe learned phy
sician, known as the Elzevir library.
Eugene was tben n college freshman,
and, having procured a skeleton key to
the closet, with his friends, Adolpho,
Adam, Veron and others, proceeded
every night to investigate the coutents
of the bottles. Not wishing to have
their explorations prematurely stopped,
they took the precaution to till up the
partially exhausted flasks with water
and then to reseal them. When, fur a
long time afterward, the doctor brought
forth samples of his precious stock for
the delectation of guests worthy cf it,
and the company tasted it with a duo
sense of awo, it was privately felt that
the celebrity ot these great brands was
all moonshine, that ordinary table d'hoto'
bordeaux was preferable to them. But
nobody dared to eay so, and it was culy
after tho death of his dreaded parent
that tbo novelist confessed the sacrilege
lie Got a Mats.
A sea captain called at a village inn
and caked the landlady, a ycuEg widow :
"Do yon know where-1 can get a
mate? I havo lost my mute."
"1 am very sorry for you, Mr. ,"
the said, smiling. "I want a mate, too,
and cannot get one. As wo are in the
same position, I'll tell yon what I'll do
if you'll be mine, I will be yours. "
Ee closed with the bargain, and, Ihe
widow keeping her word, be is now
supplied with two mates. Pearson's
