New York, February 8 The great blizzard has brought a complete snow blockade. All through New England the storm has prevailed from the nortr.eist and was the roost severe in very many years. two passenger trains are stalled at Green Point on Long Island. The pas sengers have left the cars and are being taken care of in the farm houses near Riverhead. Vessels have been dashed to pieces on the const and a number of lives are lost, Telegraphic communication between Boston and this city is still entirely cut off. Wires are leveled in all directions and the electric light secice in all east ern towns is crippled by the mass of wet snow which lodged and broke the poles and wires. '- In Maine the severity of the blizzard was felt to the utmost. The entire State Is blocked and all travel is tied up. It is now estimated that the storm lias cost Boston two million dollars. While tempo rarily insane, Lucy Taylor, aged 20 years, who is the daughter of a Treasury clerk, leaped from a window. Feb. 2, '98. f Last night the old employees of the revenue office presented ex-Collector Simmons a handsome desk, .couch and two chairs for his new law office, The Railroad Commission reduced the rate in car load lots of corn about 33 per cent. They demanded that certified lists of all passes issued for the past 8 years bv the A. C. L. and the S. A. L. At its last meeting the Commission asked very courteously the head officials of these two roads, if they were willing to give the Commission these lists, and they re i plied they would most probably do so, The Southern R. R. people said openly that they did not like the Commission's manner of ordering them to do a thing, and at the same lime enquiring if Hie other railroads could do it. Now it seems the demand is made on the others also. The Commission orders the A. C L. and the S. A. L. to furnish it with lists of all special freight rates granted to any persons or to hotels. '.the Commission further orders that whenever freight is lost or damaged, or an over charge made, if the company shall fail in 30 days after notico to deliver the goods lost or damaged, in good order, or refund any over charge the company shall lie liable for the lull value of such goods. ; One of the officers on the torpedo boat Winslow that had such a terrible time off Hatteras lost week !s ensign Worth Bagley of Raleigh.
