Craven Cennty.
New Borne. N.C. March 23. 1898
NOT NEEDED THIS TEAR.
The very fine distinction 'which
a few newspapers in this State,
claiming to be Democratic, are
making between fusing with Marion
Butler and co- operating with Ma
rion Butler in this year's political
contest in .North Carolina, shows
how little the editors of these same
p ipors had learned in the fight of
189(5, and how little they appreciate
the results of that political contest
as since shown in North Carolina.
According to these papers, fusion
with Senator Butler is a shocking
thing, Fusion would mean en
dorsing Republicans and Populists
for the State Assembly and for
State offices.
Bat cc-jperation with Senator
Butler would mean a division of
CoDgr'tssmea between Democrats
and Populists, and tho shutting out
of the very wicked Republicans
from Congressional honors, prevent
them from getting a Senator iu
place of tho Honorable Marion
Butler, and perhaps carry the State
on a National Co-operative Demo
Pop ticket in 1000
Now this (Jo-operation is a very
pleasant thing for Marion Butler
and these same Democrats in name,
who are looking ahead for greater
things than mere local honors such
us might be found in
lina..
North Uaro
.fro , . 1
But, how is it going to be with the
great mass of the voters in the State
who are trying to endure the pres
ent (State administration, who are
not seeking placos at the Govern
ment pie counter, but who want
such a home administration as will
enable them to live and do business
in a State which shall have credit
and reputation in the nation?
Suruly the masses of the voters
are entitled to recognition, to say
something, and to vote for men who
represent thoir sentiments and stand
for their principles.
Fusion or co-operation, which
ever term may be used, if eoupred
with Marion, Batlerism ii in this
year of 1308, not going to be swal
lowed by the Democratic rotors of
North Carolina.
If the Ddmocratfc parly in this
Stato can only go into the fight by
an alliance with Butler, then the
light is already over so far as any
chances of a Democratic legislature
are possible.
And lor that matter so far as any
condemnation of Kussellism it oon-
oorned.
The fight today in North Caro
lina is against Butlorism, is against
Kusselliirr., the two worst forms of
centralized political power that the
State has suffered under, or conld
suffer coder.
Senator Butler may seduce a few
Democrats by hit smooth talk of
co-operation," but such co-opsra-tion
meant the perpetuation of But-
. ltirisru and Iiussellism.
Tho white people, an 1 all decent
people, rogardloit of party are tick
and tired of these men.
Neither fusion nor co-operation
when associated with Butleritia it
wanted in this year of IHOi, ami let
it be hoped, never again.

Mr. J. O, Whitty, New Berno, N. O.
Dear Sir; I received Clark's Ideal, Jr.
Cutaway Harrow, and have thoroughly
tested it, on land cultivated last year,
and on land that lay out last year with
a heavy growth of grass, weeds and dew
berry vines. It docs the work thoroughly;
cutting up nil weeds, grass and vines, at
the same time breaking and completely
pulverizing the land,' Not any heavier
for team than tho ordinary two-horse
plow. Everybody pleased with it. The
company does not claim too much for
the plow. Would be glad to have the
A-4J Jleversihle Harrow, which is de
signed for cultivating the crops.
