Entered at the Poet Office, New Berne, N. C as second class matter. Official Paper of New Berae ana Craves Cosaty. New Berne. N.C. Jlarfli 25. 1898 D riHOCR i CT WANTS YOUNG MEN - The Democratic party of North Carolina for a number of years has not given due consideration, nor plaotd any value upon the services of the young men of its party, or those who entering upon the rights of citizenship might be brought within the party, as workers and voters. Thus young Democratic voter ha only been considered in the light of utility, of what he could do in way way of work and securing votes. The thought that the average young Democratic voter should be in the line of political preferment, that he was entitled to just recogni tion for services given and rendered, h is not shown itlf in Democratic primaries or conventions, nor been a matter of concern in Democratic conncils. Yeiy different has been the spirit dieplaytd by Republican managers, in fact many times have overtures been tnudu before political cam paigns were begun, to desirable joun? white men, seeking to secure thrir Bcrviccs and adherauce to Re publicanism, And these overtures in many in stance have been of a cost tempt ing character, and to resist them lias riquirtd courage and strong conviction of principles, that Re publicanism in North Carolina was not the right political faith for them t ) embrace. The question does tho Democratic party of North Carolina want the young man, will of course be an swered at once in the affirma tive. . Hut the question will the young man cuter the Democratic party's ranks, is oue which demands the b -st thought and endeavor of the parly, in order that it may be suc cessfully accomplished. The really successful political party of today must deal in practical matters. It will not do to be senti mental, and think that by calling up 'C8, "!i or '7C, aud the sceues enacted in those stirring times will gain yonng voters today. Every young man of North Car olina is much more concerned aboul his individual prospects, how shall it be with him. today and tomorrow, than he is abont the State's politi cal past, which he regards as dead and buried, so far as it u fleets him, The young man of today is ambi tious, and the proper way, and only way to secure him is to open the lints for him, make the way attrac tive, and let him feel that individu hI merit will have its just reward. This is most assuredly true in the piliticul Ik-Id, and no greater obsta cle will the Democracy of North Carolina have to face, than these si ne joung men, unlets it opens it rinks freely and fully to them, and si iceti'ly welcomes them, at the sinic tinio according them prefer ment in proportion to the merit displaced by them, individually. The De mocratic party of North Carolina wants yonng men in its ranks, not ouly for war, but also as councillors, young men who can liifjit in the ranks and who after the contest will be acknowledged as sharers in the victory. It Is tho young and enthusiastic Democratic) worker who is needed by the Democracy of North Caroli na, and every effort should be made to secure biro in this year's cam paigu. Geo. 8.
