Tha bom bardment of Mataazas, tlio first impor tant hostile act of the war, took place Wednesday. The first shot was fired from the eight inch gun amidships on the port side of tha New York. This gun is under Cadet Boone. The harbor of Matanzaa is protectod from the sea by a lorg, low, strip ot land. On this point a battery has been placed, and for the last few days the offi cers of the Puritan and Cincinnati have observed men working on the ramparts and placing the guns in position. This fact was reparted to the admiral, and the bombardment of Wednesday was to clear awt y this port. '-. When the call came to general quar ters the flagship was 4,000 yards off the shore. The Puritan was about 1,000 yaras further out, on the New York's port side, and the Cincinnati lay still another thousand yards out, moving' slowly to t'he starboard of the flagslilp. A( m r .1 Sampson and Captain Chad- wick were on the forward bridge of the New York throughout the bom bardment "; CaaaHtaimSatrinl. The bull's-eye at which the first gun was trained was a rampart of yollow earth about 23 yards long. . With a glass It was possible to see groups of men moving about upon It. - The first shot fell about a hundred yards to the right of this bank and the bushes where it struck were thrown up into the air in a cloud of yellow sand. The second shot came from one of tho eight inch guns in the New York's for ward turret, which is under command of Lieut Frank Marble. It fell at the ex treme edge of the point of land, two hun dred yards to the left of the fort, but the sister gun followed it like a reverbora tlon and struck the fort fair in the cen tre with a projectile five feet long aud weighing two hundred and fifty pounds. A Meaaa or Daatraetloa. The earthworks rose in the air like a geyser of muddy water, and the work of many men for three days was demolish ed as completely and as suddenly as if au earthquake had swallowed it up. now many of thoso men were demolished with the earthworks or what guns were dismantled it was impossible to see. Simultaneously with this third shot a bitteiy in a fort on the further aide of the harbor opened oo the warships, and all ports of the New York returned the lire. It was almost Impossible to keep ceunt of them. The smoke as it drifted back over the ship's superstructure and between decks made it difficult to see which of the shots had reached the shore. Mas Am Ainrrleaa Hart. Not more than five or six shots from the forts came near the flagship. One shell fell about a hundred yards to the stern. Another fell short by a hundred yards, and a shrapnel shell broko almost overhead. There were no casualtes among the Americans. . The fact that the ships had stripped for action, and that every unnecessary piece of Iron work and wood work had been removed accounted for tho Utile damage done by the concussion of their great guns. The Puritan aud Cincinnati also shot well. plaadla Dlaelpllne. This was the first time one of our greatest warships had gone into action, and it was interesting to note the per fectness of discipline that obtained. Officers gave their orders in voices hard ly raised above that of every day. The men laughed when the shots struck home, but there was no cheering, nor any greater show of excitement than at practice. At the same time the deck of the su perstructure heaved. Where you corres pondent stood, on 4he forward bitdge, back of the turret, the concussion of her guns made the ear drum tingle. The smoke filled the mouths and nostrils of the officers and dimmed their eyes, so that It was for second al a lime impos slble to see or speak. Riciiaiid (Iahdinu Davis. FORT MACON DESERTED.
