Washington, June 3 Admiral Cervera sixty-five years of age. Hib father was a nobleman, possessing large estates aud was one of the richest wine mer- chants in Spain. His mother was re-. molely connected with tho royal family. He graduated from the Naval Acade my at San Firnando in 1854. In 1859 he participated in the expedition against Moiocco, next he served in Chinese and Peruvian waters. and .was sent to Cuba when the ten-years war began. The Pelnyo, the first and only first class battleship in the Spanish navy, was constructed under his supervision and he assumed command of her as admiral. He has 15 medals of honor and is nc- counted (he foremost navnl i fAcer of Spain. His ability is unquestioned, but he is insolent and overbearing, hard and cruel to his men and much disliked by them. It is said the 1st Regiment will send recruiting officers here in a day or so to get men to fill out the companies to the same number 106. ! Of the 60 negroes who left here for Fort Macon, only 40 stuck out to get to the end of the journey. Some that came back said they fared badly enough at was too much. Cspt. Lee, U. S. A., the recruiting offi cer for the negro "immunes" from Vir ginia and North Carolina, after being told he could not mobili.c his "immunes" Raleigh, applied to the Mayor of Greensboro as to the plan of having them there. Tho Populists hardly know "where they arc at," nor which way to turn since the Democrats gave them the cold shoulder. The Republican convention which will meet about the last of the month may consider Populist-Republican fusion but it is by no means certain. The flour issued the Second Regiment is of such a poor quality, that the com missary wanted to refuse to accent it. It comes from Atlanta. a lr.u P leeus or Heroism. Special to Journal. Washington, June 4. Admiral Samp son has made an ollicial report to the Navy Department concerning the sinking of the big iron vessel Merrimac iu the harbor entrance of Sautlugo dc Cuba. Ihe plan was to sink the vessel directly in the channel and thus form an effectual blockade to the escape of Admiral Ger vera from the harbor. The Merrimac had been used as a collier to supply the American fleet. She was bought in New York and being big and heavy was selected for the purpose. Admiral Samps n opened fire on the Santlugo forts in the later rart of the night about 3 o'clock to cover the con templated attempt. Volunteers wore called for to man the Merrimac and sink the ship In the mouth of the channel. Naval constructor Uobsoo and six men were chosen from the volunteers While under heavy Are tbey passed Into the channel entrance. At the selected dnt a torpedo was exploded in the lu riur of the vessel and she weut down at once. Tha gallant crew took to the boats. Two of the men were wounded but only slightly. Knowing that they could nut escape back to the American fleet, they rowed to the Bpauish flagship where they surrendered. Admiral Cervera, under a Sag of truce, offers to exchange the captives for Spar. isb nrlsoneri In possession of tho United States at Atlanta. The gallant Cervera applauded the bravery of the .mon wl performed the perilous adventure. II Ma Them. Admiral Sampson In his report to the government add that tlx SpanUn vessels of Admiral Oervera's squadron art surely In Santiago harbor, and that they cannot escape. Tbeir capture or their destruc tion is certain. The Spaniard have been erecting some new battcrlu by taking th guns from the ships In th harbor. They are very short of coal, and It i this fact which caused them to be sparing of sendin their ships to sea. Maallac Will rail. IUiriMoltK, Juno 4. A letter received from one of the men nboard the cruiser Dixie gives an account of some exper- ienccs of the Marvlund naval militiamen uring the first cruise at sea this wiek The Dixie left Hampton Roads Monday morning and returned there again Tues day afternoon. On Monday afternoon, about two hours after the Dixie had passed Cupe Henry, it reached Cae Charles lightship and sent off several officers in a whaleboat to take a position tor target practice. While waiting for the whaleboat lo re turn a steamship was sighted on the horizon bearing down on the Dixie' bow, The Dixie immediately started at full speed for the stranger, leaving the whaleboat Upon coming closer it could be seen that the stranger was fitted out us a cruiser, and after she was signaled and did not reply suspicions arose that she might be a Spaniard. A call to gen oral quarters was mode', the ship cleared for action, ill guns loaded with full charges and the Dixie headed for her. There was the greatest excitement aboard and evory mau had his gun trained for the s'gnal. But upon geltiug still closer it was found that the stranger was the auxiliary ciuiser Resolute, formerly the steamer Yorktown, which had left Pew York the day before with a crew of New York naval militiamen. The disappoint' mint to the Dixie boys, according to the le'.tcr, was a cruel one, for they were counting on taking a prizo and union the Spaniards to holystone the decks ot their cruiser, a kind of work for which the amateur sailors have no nsc.
