Ofllcial Taper of New Berne and Craven County. New Iterne, N.C. Juno 8, 1808 INDIFFERENCE TO BOMB INSTITUTIONS. The establishment of any busi ness, industry or institution is not fioine to prove a success unites its promoters stand by it. What purpose does it serve, if an industry is built uud put into suc cessful operation, if these interested fail to see to its continuance, by neg lecting to attend the meetings of its stockholders? It may be urged that only those who put in money by taking stock, are interested and therefore if they chooso to lose their money invested. it is only their business, and tlie public has no concern over it. In a sense this is true, bat in more senses it can be held true that no one person nor several persons have the right to make doliberate failure of any institution which may affect the credit or welfare of the commu nity. A town or city's reputation and credit are built up and maintained by its citizens, and while these may be further enhanced by one or more of the citizens composing the com munity, yet no citizeu has the priv ilege of injuring his own property if by so doing he disturbs the welfare of his community. In making local application, the Journal will call attention to two instances of this iudiffereuco to home institutions. At the school commencement this year, bow many trustees of the Academy were in attendance? And surely if the school trustees are indifferent to the success of the Academy, h it to bo expected that the parents of children in this com munity will make any extra efforts to send their children to a school which is so indifferently attended by those who ought to be most con cerned? At a called meeting of a public buiness institution the other night there was not enough of the stock holders present to make a quorum, thercfoie the matters of this con corn received no attention, while every stockholder knew that there was business which needed acting upon, and thut a postponement might mean soriont loss to both the stockholders and the business inter ests of New Berne. There can be no f-xcuso for this neglect of home affairs by its citi tent. If New Berne is to have schools, tbey must receive attention, and so must every business enterprise. Individual indifference may exist, if it does tho edicational and com tnercial interests of New Berne should be taken away from those who have neglected their duties, especially as such neglect affects the welfare of tho entire community, and there matters bo giveu to those who will sustaiu what is entrusted to their bands. The result of the -Crimean war gave to the British nation not one single foot of foreign soil nor any pecuniary com pensation whatsoever. The only benefit derived from the war, which lasted two years, was to keep Russia ont of Con stantinople and give the English a way to India aud the east that was undis puted. For this end the British lost 23, 744 men killed in action or died from wounds, cholera or other diseases. The loss to the French allies lu the same campaign has been estimated at 63,600 and the Russians as high as 500,000. The war also cost the British $206,205, 000. War is a costly as well as a dan gerous business. It is the court of last resort with nations nowadays as it was the first in ancient times. Healthy Checrfalnew. Do not allow a melancholy person to enter the sickroom. There is nothing so absolutely necessary to an invalid as cheerful companions. A nervous woman may bo thrown into a relapso by a well meaning but mischief making friend rotating to her- how a mutual friend suffered with a similar disease. The fatigue felt after exertion is now usually attributed to the presence in the muscles and blood of the chemical Drodncts that result from action.
