Onicial Taper or New Berne and ''. Cravea' County. New Berne. N.C. Jane 9, 1898 CAN CHARITY BE OVERDONE? It has long been the boast of New Berne that 110 sufferer from actual want could be found within the boundaries of this city. To sustain this position of course two things would he necessary, first, that every person living in this city was provided with a u.eans of 1 i v . lihood, or that New Heme was well fixed in charitable iDstita tiono. It can hardly be maintained that the first proposition is true, for very often the citizens of New Berue ere asked to coutribute to some charity, . which is seeking money or clothing for some poor persons. Therefore it must entirely be due to the charity of New Berue, that no sufferer for food, shelter or rai ment is found within the city. While this condition is to the credit of New Berne's charitable ness, yet it may be asked, cannot charity be overdone, and might not it be a greater charity to provide those in want with good respectable work than to provide them with shelter, food and raiment? An advertisement is appearing in these coin in us which calls for fifteen boys and girls to work at the knit tins; mills in this city. These situa tions are open to white labor, only. To this "Want" call, not a single application has been made. What is the cause for this, for surely there can be seen every day upon the streets boys and girls who could fill these positions at the knitting mills? Here is a work for the charity circles and societies of this city which would prove of real vUue. namely, getting boys and girls to work, Betting regular work before them, and e'.ucatiii them in the art of self-providing. Providing the bovs and girls of this city with regular employment at good wages, would be a charity of real benevolence, one far exceeding any temporary provision against hunger or the weather, an act of charity which would prove far reach ing in its good effects. Providing boys and girls with honest employment, this is a work of charity which needs cultivating by New Berne's, charitable organiza tions, and one which will bear greater and better fruit, than the mere giving of food and shelter, to those who seek temporary assist ance. Provide work and there will le no calls for aid from hungry or shel terless people, for all can learn a livelihood and have homes of their own. Ha rrasaatore blnm lata the Chans a Clrala sad IU Basalts Aa AsslahU rsaalalae Coasla aad a fmHOf Hocri- A good story is told concerning one of last winter's debutantes, and since the heroine tells it on herself then is no impropriety in making it public The winter before last Hiss M. was Btill in the schoolroom, and though she possessed social aspirations they were not gratified by her mother. A cousin from Philadelphia came to spend the month of January with the family, and, being an heiress and accustomed to going about a great deal, her wardrobe was a thing of wonderful fascination to little Miss M. Singularly enough, the figures of the two girls were of an exact size, and the younger found con stant delight in arraying herself in the frippery belonging to her good natnred cousin. Maiiy an nour was aevoreu uj flouncing about the third story with long skirts and hair tucked up under the latest bonnet importation, and there was much secret practice with lorgnette and fan. Mrs. M. and the rich cousin were plunged to the eyebrows in social gaye ties, to the envy of the young daughter of the house. One 'day Mrs. M. was indisposed, and the rich cousin was con fronted with the necessity of attending by herself a mnsicale, three teas and making the cabinet calls. When she be moaned the fact of going alone, her youthful kinswoman was seized with an inspiration. "Oh, well, said she, "lend me somo of your clothes and let me go with you. Mother will never, know anything about it " Being as amiable as rich, the visitor ( consented, promising herself a treat in beholding her young cousin's entrance 1 into society. Only a short time was nec essary for the changes of costume, and when the heiress appeared at Mrs. Blank's mnsicale every one turned to look twice at the stunning little figure. It was a vision of bright eyes behind a tantalizing veil, rebellions yellow curls carelessly knotted and feathers, laces, velvets and silks irresistibly Fronchy. If she was the sensation of the mnsi cale, sho was the universal rage at tho teaa Every one wanted to meet her. But not so; there - were consequences to bo faced. The next morning Mrs. M. appeared at the breakfast table, aud in tho bnnch I nf tnnil thorn wp.rfl teveml small envel- ones addressed to Miss M. Also there , were others with the inscription "Mr. ! and Mrs. M. and Miss M." Mrs. M. passed these over with only an elevation of tho eyebrows, but her daughter thought it wise to leave the room. Open ing her private letters, Mrs. M. read a uoto from a friend apologizing for a so cial error aud inviting . Miss M. to assist at her at homo tluit afternoon. A Becond note contained au apology for not hav ing invited Miss M. to a debntaute luucheou on the previous day. Mrs. M. was completely mystified, but an early visitor soon opened her eyes. This visitor called hurriedly to say how surprised she was that Mrs. M. was introducing a daughter, and compliments were profuse upon the beauty and success of that daughter. "She was quito tho sweetest thing yes- terduy at tho mnsicale.
