peace has come from a fresh source, lu
stem! of the friendly offices of Austria,
it is intimated thnt Spain would now ae
ccpt peace proposals from the Powers,
but would not entertain them as coming

for this statement is given ns the Secrc
tary of Premier Sagasta and it comes by
way of Brussels.

As Ambassador Hay gave no details of
the reported surrender, it is supposed
that the dispatches received In London
from Hong Kong barely announced the
fall of the city and did not say whether
the surrender was to Admiral Dewey or
to the insurgents.
