An exchange refera to "one of Marion Butler's " reckless state ments." Has Marion Butler , made any other kind during this cam paign? '.":'., Was Adjutant A. D. Cowles re cent interview, as published in the Washington Poet, prepared by His Official Bigness, D. L. Russell, the maker of the Second Regiment's Adjutant? It is more than a coincidence that Governor Kussell's fear of a riot and the near approach of election day, should be the excuse for extension of furloughs and delay in muster ing out the North Carolina' troops. This is no time for white people in North Carolina to have' political differences. The Carteret county weekly papers should bury their per eonaliiies. It is tither white man or black man. There is no middle ground. , SANGER EXISTS FOI, ALL. The call of the white people of Eastern Noith Carolina to the white people of Western North Carolina, to come to their poll tied relief, and help overthrow the role of liussell ism and Negroism which dominates the eastern section of the State, is a call which has more in it than our western friends may be conscious of. The rule of Kusaellura need not be con Sued to Wilmington, New Berne and Greenville, for with an election favorable to Republicau- Populist fusiou, the same fate can be visited npon Greensboro, Char lotte and Winston. Therefore the decision on Novem ber 8th, is one which involves the future destiny of the white people of the entire State. With the report of the conditions from Eastern Carolina, which hare been made known throughout all sections of the State; it ia for the white people to judge whether the present evils existing in one portion may not extend to any other part. White people in some, sections may think the negro, aa a new comer an impossibility to them, that Eastern Carolioa is his natural home, and that there he must live, even if immigration from . other States sets in. But it must not be forgotten that the danger is not all from the negro, per te. Very far from it. There is ibe danger from theolass of whites who are willing to accept negro votes, in order to secure offloe and these office holders can only bold their places by giving all sub ordinate places to their political ally, ths negro voter. Upon this system of politics! rec iprocity, with farther Republican 1'opulist success, tha entire State can tie kept in political subjection, and the west in tims must be given over to the saa class of politioians as now control the east, lor the east ern portion will soon have an over flow of negroes tor office only, who must aod will bate onloa under Uussell's dictation. Political distress is every where in lorth Carolina, tio portion bo must bear Ibe shame of the whole, and tbe remedy is only to be found in tne united white vote on Aovenv ber 8th- The danger is common to all, present and future, ttrtrefore Is every white voUr drive awav th menace, by voting solidly for White rni premier which means good government and tha safety of all TJow u frevaat Cr.ua. The pun ishment was sometimes reduced to a fame when the administrating hand had been well "oiled" or belonged to a soft hearted officer of justice, as In a case mentioned by the poet Cowper, where the thief was the only one oonoerned who suffered nothing. Some groat men bave a weakness for what one might call stage effects, and sometimes It is obvious that tbe effects have entailed careful preparation before hand in order to bring them off. But I know of very few Instances where great men have been caught at their prepara tions. However, at one of the meetings of the British association I heard a story told in this connection about the lnte Pro fessor Tyndail which is well worth re peating. Tbe scene of tbe story Is laid in the lecture room of the Royal soolety on the morning of the day for one of the pro fessor's lectures. On tho morning In question a certain Mr. B., who was engaged upon soma chemical analysis, wanted to see Professor Tyndail about It, and, knowing that, as he was lecturing that evening, he would probably find the professor engaged In ar- ranging his experiments for the evening, he went into the lecture room to look for him. Professor, Tyndail was not prepar ing experiments when Mr. B. came In. Mo was engaged In vaulting on one hand backward and forward over the Iron rail ing from behind which the leoturer deliv ers his leoture. Mr. B. was rather sur prised, but supposed that Professor Tyn dail; being very hard worked, was glad to take a little exercise whenever and In whatever way he could. " ..'.;. Mr. B. happened to attend the lecture that evening. In the course of tho lecture Professor Tyndail was reading from notebook, which he rested on the Iron rail ing In front of him, when, apparently by accident, he lot the book drop. Without a moment's hesitation the professor placed one hand on the railing, lightly vaulted over, pioked'up the book and then lightly vaulted back again. ' The audience greet ed the performance with loud applause. Then. Mr. B. understood that In the morn ing Professor Tyndail bad been preparing to sustain the popular reputation as an athlete whioh ho hod acquired from hi Alpine exploits and was not merely snatching what exercise he could get dur ing a rare few minutes' leisure Today.
