Mayor Wad dell and the new city government are bringing order out of chaos and every thing possible Is being done4o restore confidence. , l' In anticipation of trouble the women and children of many white famllies left the city before the election, but they are now returning, , For two weeks a number of residences in the city were not inhabited, but there are few closed now. " . . .t! One week ago G. Z. French, the acting sheriff, left Wilmington npder threats that if he came back it would not be healthy for nlm. He was followed to the railway station by an ' indignant crowd, and violence would have been done him bad it not been for a prom inent democrat, who went so far as to draw a pistol and order the crowd to stay out of the car. French has a plan tation at Rocky Point, fourteen miles from Wilmington, and since his banish ment he has been at his country place. He stated that as soon as everything got quiet here he intended to morn, bat was warned not to do so. French in tended to come , hero this evening to straighten up some of his attain, and the mayor ordered a squad of police to the dopot to protect him, but he failed to put in an appearence. He got a friend to have his baggage shipped from a hotel to him, and it is, therefore, pre sumed that his' absence Will be pro longed.' ; . ' 1 " -:' '.' " "' Among other important legislation to bo enacted will be an election bill which wilt protect the ballot and preserve while supremacy. The feature of the bill which will get rid of a large part of tite negro vote in the eastern counties is being con sidered by the leading Democrats of the State. - . . Much legislation of the fosionisU will be repealed, and especially the char ters under which many cities in eastern North Carolina hava been negroixed. Many white Republican and Popullsl leaders are coming forward and express ing their eagerness to have the negroes disfrancised. Republicans particularly ar open in their declarations on this question.
