Died at bis residence in the city of NeWbern, at mid-day on November 20, in the 66th year of hit age, Daniel T. Carraway. ; . . Major Carraway, though suffering from declining health for many months, after all passed very suddenly to bis rest. He was an old Confederate soldier, hav ing beenJICommissary of Gen. Branch's brigade, and won honor and esteem in that lime that tried men's souls. He was participant inthe famous battle of Newbern, when the horrors of war with drum, cannon and rifle that first came to the homes of onr people. After this splendid brigade received its first bap tism of blood by the waters of the Neuse it stood to its colors as one of the most heroic squadrons of the long struggle, (everywhere feeing danger end death will invincible courage. Major Carraway witnessed the changing scenes of tbe ter rible conflict, when his brigade shared the ordeal, and be treasured the memo ries ot that glorious and patriotic life up to his last hours. ' ' After the close of tbe war he returned to the quiet walks ot business, bringing the experience of a methodical, practical, mind to whatever engaged ills thoughts. Our Impression of him was, that be never was ambitious of building up any particular work, but whatever bis band found to do therein' to move quietly without friction or display. He was a loyal and useful communicant of Christ Church, Newbern, after filling prominent stations among its leading laymen, its prosperity and influence lylnj verycloe to his heart.' Though, as far as we know, not trained in literary methods and rules, he had a clear, strong Intellect, and fur nished many interesting articles on a large variety of subjects, to tbe leading Journals of the country. And we are bound to say, that be wrote sensibly and wel). Ills accounts of his travels, of the men and woman that be saw, of the places that be vUlted, and the faces that impressed bis intelligent spirit of In quiry, were distinctly a valushle contri bution to newspaper literature. As he grew older, his m inner became graver, and a look of sadness blent with the appearance ot introspection seem id to change the outward- individueJityof the man Loving to be with bis chil dren, cordially reipectful to his neigh bors and friends,, and honoring every institution and toot of the country that gave bim birth, like all veterans of the civil war, and especially those who Intro lost precious ties, his thoughts were evideutly much iu the past. ; After all, without being at all aged, be has fallen at his post. . ltut to his family and friends it will be a pleasant remem brance, that be fell like one of Christ's warriors on the tented field. Wl'hout excess of emotion, without any dramatic preparation of soul, he has silently fallen on sleep. But his vacant place at Christ Church, and hia absence from bis home, will witness to bis faithful attachment to tho highest and noblest Interests of this mortal life. . Jobs 8. " The Governor has made J C L Harris special aide on his staff and the North Carolina Agent for war claims with the rank of Colonel. Wonder how many more honors and offices J, C. L. can sustain.
