The method of Instruction adopted In tho eaae of the hoy just eltod la that usually employed by the stjtnaliacn in breaking In new mem bers of the corpa. A certain number ot the rnessnunr boys on a warship are selected aa poasmslna; the qualities which go to make up a good trig, nalman naaaly, good eyesight. Intelli gence and application. The education ot these boys begins at once under one of the experienced signalmen, usually a veteran who has had pnrrtoua experience In train ing boys for this special work. Be forms his pupils Into domes according to thcr watcbos, and from that time on the minds of the prosiecUve signalmen are filled, sleeping or wuklng,' with dots, dashes and ducka. All day long while the light lasts the boys may bo seen In pairs alnut the ship talking to ono another in waves and ducks. When tho regulation flag cannot be obtained, a hundkerchiof fixed to the end of a stick of wood ora grate bar serves tho asuio purposo. Irrespective of the lntornutlonal oodeC tliere aro four kinds of signals on hoard a worship, nil variations of. the Morso tele graphic coda Tho wigwag signals are mode by substituting ourtuln waves of tho Dog for dote and dashes on telegraphlo sounder. In, night signaling the llnrso code Is Interpreted by tvd awl white lan terns placed abovo the otlicr and operated by an eloctrlo key on the bridge, two red lights and one white light standing for two dots and a dash on tho sounder. Another means of communication which exactly resemble tho electric telegmph In Its method of operation is by tho use of the team slron. ; In the eharthouse and con ning tower on every warship an oleetrio Clock Is situated, which has several func tions. It can bo adjusted to the steam whtHtleona foggy day so as to blow blast at oertnln Intervals, or It may be used to indicate the proper Intervals when firing saluting guns. Attached to this eloctrlo clock is a regular telegraphic ky by which the Morse code may be delivered by the steam whistle. 1 . . This method of communication Is only used, however, in very foggy weather, when It Is Impossible to muke out the other signals, as it not only wastes a groat deal ot steam and lncrousos tho ooal eon sumption, but makes a most appalling din when any number of ships are engag ed In conversation at tho soma time, ' Tho position of ft signal boy is ono of considerable responsibility, as all forma tion and soiling orders from the flagship are transmitted to the fleet when at sea through his agency. A mistake In read ing a signal might oauno very serious com plications. Great care is thoroforu taken in selecting tho members of the corps, ana only tho services of boys who have proved themselves thorough masters of the differ ent eodos niu. accepted. , Even among the most skillful signalmen mistakes occa sionally occur, though tho many precau tions taken to Insure accuracy reduce the liability to error to a minimum. , v. ,. A signal boy on tho battleship Texas was returned to tho messenger service simply becauso he misspelled a wool The wigwag boy on the flagship onled up the Toxits one morning ae the fleet lay at anchor off TompktnrvlUo. After an exchange of wags the signal boy on tho Texas went to tho officer of tho deck on his ship and in formed him that the passed assistant en gineer was requested to proceed to the Cyrus to servo on a board of special survey. Tho passed assistant engineer had just come off watch, having been up all ulght, and he said things about boards of survey. He consulted with the othor officers of the ship and loomed that the Cyrus was a small converted tugboat lying in tho Brooklyn navy yard. The orders called upon the board to assemble at 10 o'clock, and aa it was then 9:30 o'clock, the en gineer realised that ho hod no time to lose. Jumping into his shore clothes the officer hired a boat and made tho best possible time to th'3 railroad station, whore he ouf fered the annoyance of seeing the train pull out just as be reached the platform, It was a boiling hot day, and the engineer trotted and fumed, to no purpose, over the delay, when he eventually reached tho navy yard, he loomed that no board of survey had been appointed to meet on tho Cyrus, and he accordingly mado the best of his way back to his ship, On the way home ho met a brother officer who said:- -- - -.! ";.-.-'.' "Hella, old roanl ; Why weren't you on hand to take your place on the survey board of the Cygtius?" V "Cygniie!" gasped the other. "Why, I was told to report on the Cyrus." i i The remainder of the engineer's Jour Boy was spent in considering the Worst poHslblo penalty that could bo meted out to the signal boy who had caused him to take such a trip on an August day, when tho ship to which he had' boon ordered lay within 300 foot of his own vossel.
