Leak, the well kaowa sod lalaealial
negro preacher politician was asked what
was the attitude of his race towards the
f ranch ise amendment to the eoostltatioa.
Dr. Leak replied; "They are aot caring
much about it. They have very little te

a big mijorlty, 40,000 or more, I believe."
The A. hi. K. church held a Sunday
school instltnte here today at which "Jim
Crow" cars and the franchise amendment
to the constitution was among the chief
topics of dlscuisloa, the question being
ae to whether Jim Crow cars humiliate
the negro and whether the amendment
dlsconrages or sn cod rages him. It wonld
bs easy to answer both by saying that
there is ne humiliation whatever In the
Jim Crow cars, but quite a reverse, and
as to the franchise amendment that by
requiring bis education it wonld natur
ally tend to develop any ambition the
negro may manifest or develop.
The July erro of the Crlminal Court
for this county is In session, aud the
work of disposing of the cases has bees
speci&cslly swift. A youth fourteen
years old who has repeatedly been before
the court was given five years on the
public roads. A long term seems to be
the only hope ot redeeming such cases.
Last yesr the fusion board of peniten
tiary directors announced that at the
Anson farm, near Wadesboro, it would
establish a reformatory for young crimi

caine of It. A number of while aud
negro boys have been sentenced this
week to long terms, and Judge Fred
Moore, In sentencing them, expressed in
the plainest terms the need of a reforma
tory. 1
