IUleuih, July 1J After hearing the arguments the comruUiloa overruled the Allsutlc North Carolina Railroad ex ceptions as to tu valuation line and it remains at $,'tX per mile. In tbe as sessment of the Atlantic X Ta lkio Rail road tbe commission ordered that the valuation be reduced from $9,475 to f&0 per mile. The road la 320 milet long and Ibis reduction amounts to $ fc2,(XK). The valuation of tbe East Tennessee and Western North Carolina ilallioad was reduced from ,000 to 1,MQ per mile Tbe valuation of tbe Postal Telegraph Company was reduced from 100,000 to t)0,000. The commission declined to reduce the assessment of the Westers L'nlon. It stands at $1,000,000. There were no reductions save as to tbt two roads above referred to and the Postal Telegraph Company. It was ordered that all these changes In valuations, as made by commission stand and that the exceptions of the Atlantic Coast Line, Southern and Sea board Air Line be not sustained. No notice is as yet given of any appeal. P. II. Buabee, counsel for tbe Southern Express Company, said It had not made reports to the State Auditor this year because It was not thought to be required by tbe act of tbe last Legislature but Is required for next year. The commis sion will not assess the Express Com pany this year but will do so next year 1 he corporation commission, on mo tion of John W. Hinsdale, counsel for the Governor, ordered the Southern Rail way to appear July 25th and show cause if any, why It should not be assessed for tax on rolling stock used on the North Carolina Railroad during the years 1H93, M and 'D7, which It failed to report and also as to rolling stock used on the Piedmont Railroad during 18J4, 'SS and 98. Similar notices were, on Hinsdale's motion, served on the Mercantile Trust & Deposit Company as to rolling stock now used -op the Seaboard Air Line and on the Seaboard A Roanoke Railroad for rolling stock now used on the Roanoke & Tar River Railroad. Tbe Btate arsenal will be removed from tbe capllol square across the street about 800 feet west of Its present posi tion, to a lot which the board of public buildings and grounds has purchased for (3,850. It will be put on the rear portion of the lot, to that when the Legislature meets, If it desires a larger arsenal, . the necessary auxopriatlon can be made to over the cost, or If the present one Is used a hall of records or some other pub lic building can be placed on the front of the lot. The purchase Is a good one. - There is much dissatisfaction at tbe appointment of W. J. Sutton, one of Governor Russell's porteges to a position In tbe revenue office. The old-Hue Re publicans are apxious to know what return the Governor bvgolng to give the party for the act on the part oX-Collector Duncan. ",.
