Sir Oeorf Bteaait White reaolvwl to give battle with a view of re- capluilng Elandslaate. " A BHtiah armored train, supported by two tral a loads of Infantry, oa approach ing the Boer position, was shelled. The British artillery was at once brought up and drove the Boer from their gun, making a series of brilliant daahea Into a valley and np the succetale height to cot nearer the Boer main poal tloo. Thrice were the Boer batteries on the way allcenced by British artillery, although the Boers fought with great pluck aad determination, returning each time. General White's gone moved, and rained shrapnel and Maxim bnllet again-t the advance. 8oon a tremendous artillery duel wae In progress. Two Boer guns, splendidly placed, were stubbornly fought for two hours and a quarter, while mounted Boers tried toceme Into contact with the British oa the left and the right " Then, at IS p. m. the Devnneblre Itcglment, balf the Gordon Highlanders, half the Manchester Regiment and the imperial Light Horse advanced oa the .wililon and stormed the Boer front. V bayonet charge was sounded as the roir of artillery on both sides suddenly aed, and the Brillah, with the Devon- hires leading, made a superb daah 'gainst the main body of the Boers, indaonted though facing a fearful Hie. Twice were tbey checked by the ter rible fusillade. Ones the advance qulv- red for a moment, but then, with ring' ing, roaring cheers, the whole of the force hurled Itself forward like an aval anche and . swept over the hills, bay oneting the broken Boer army in all di rections. The Boers were overwhelmed and as tounded. They paused, then retreated, ibea raised the while Sag and surren lered. Two or three hundred broke aad ran, pursued by the Fifth Lan clers, who charged through and through them. It was dark by this time, but the slaughter must have been great The Gordon Highlanders say the storming of Dargat Ridge vu mere child's play com pared with this attack. The Boer loss must have been heavy. The best esti mates place it at over 400 killed. . One of the captured Boers said that It be had known English" soldiers could ihoot so well he would never have gone to war. Another Boer said he knew be was fighting for a lost cause. Tet third expressed surprise that he had to shoot at men wearing khaki. He was terribly dejected. He had been told to hoot at men with rod coats and white collars, and he taw none. His Impres sion seem to be that the men who fought against him were not Englishmen. A heavy rain fell after the battle, mak ing a piteous scene on the field, where many wounded were lying. Capb Town, Oct 28. It is now defl nilely known that Glenco has been at tacked by the Boers' main northern col umn, under General Joobert, The British forces are entrenched In a good position. . A dispatch arrived at 10 p. m. an nounclng that the Boers are shelling Dundee, east of Glencoe, at long range, but that their firing is ineffective. Glkncob Camp, Natal, October 82 Heavy firing U now In progress to the northwest of this camp. London, October 82 According to dispatch from Glencoe the British caval ry, while pursuing the defeated Boers, was engaged by a strong force of the Boers on the North road. Firing is now in progress. Capb Towp, October 29 A message received from Colonel Baden-Powel, In command at M&feklnx, says that 53 Boers were killed and a large number wounded in the encounter with his force. It is believed that the explosion of dr namite at Mafeking, arranged by Colonel fowell, also resulted In large loos to the Boers, so that it is probable that General Cronje will not resume the attack, and will, perhaps, retire altogether. F 8 Duffy. Registration in New York". NiwYore. October 81. The regis tration in Greater New York Is com pleted. The total registration was 476,. 717. ' Both Tammany and Republicans lead ers declared today that they were pleased with the registration in city and State. The total In the rural cities was regarded with especial satisfaction by" the Repnb Means, as the figures are considerably In excess of what they really expected. One lesson, In the judgment of polltl clans, Is made plain by these figures. They say there has been no such arousal of publlo sentiment this year as there was during the Rooievelt or the Van Wyck-Low-Tracy campaign. For that reason the Tammany men are jubilant' They declare that there has been no slump In registering the Tammany vole and that whatever falling-off. has tsken place represents a decrease In the strength of their opponents, as compared with recent campaigns. WATSON K CRITICISED. ' waat-MawaaWB Hot ftttvaea At The Best Maa For Com ma ad At Hafllla. WAsnrnoron, Oct. 11 A very dccldtd laapraaaloa seems to prova'l among cer tala of the high naval officials that Ad miral Watson does not possess the abil ity aad Is not fitted by temperameut aad health for the exacting duties required of so Important a command as the Asia tic Station. It l certain that the Navy Department has not ths am me complete confidence la tbo Admiral, aor does It depend epos him to eierclso bis own judgement and authority as la the case of Admiral Dewey, who was supremo at Manila and la the confidence of the Washington officials. There Is good reason to believe Ad mit al Watson's health 1a far from vigor- one, aad he is holding oa against the ad vice of his friends. His command Is one that requires aa active officer of great strength, discretion and mental activity and a sick maa Is said to bo far from fitted to cope with the responsibilities of the command at Manila. Admiral Walton's position Is all the more difficult Inasmuch as be wss the successor of Admiral Dewey, who never made a mistake," or If he did the Navy Department never heard of It Admiral Watson's record Is as good as that of any officer of bis rank, but even with this he Is no regarded as eminently qualified for the work now before him. Unless bis health should show signs of improve ment, he may be relieved, In which event Admiral Remey would be his successor "When onr boys were almost dead from whooping cough, our doctor gave One Minute Cough Cure. They recovered rapidly,' writes P. B. Belles, Argyle, Pa. It cures oooghs, colds, grippe and all throat and lung troubles. F. 8. Dolly. . COTTON 'MARKET. Received by J.
