U, Nov. 14. Not long since the writer had occasion to examine the Roster, or list of name of Confederate soldiers, oo file In the S, 0. Clerks Ofllce at Raleigh. The writ- together with a number of other Wake county boys, enlisted In Captain Alex. 0. Latham's battery, of New Bern, hortly before the conscript act was put In force iu 1883. . " Capt. Latham was at the lime In Ral eigh engaged In recruiting hi company which had been greatly weakened at th the battles of of New Bern and Hanover court house. AVe accompanied him to Virginia Joining the command a tew mile below Richmond. Our first move was to Gordonvllle, where we Wake boy first found Branch Brigade, to which our command was attached. Oar first experience In battle was at, Cedar Mountain where we were with Jackson, A, P. Hill division, all summer and up to the time ot entering Maryland on the way to Bharpsborg. i At Leesburg our herses were found to be so much broken down that we bad to remain on the south side of the Potomac, Iv-was at Spout Spring on the road from Leesbnrg. to Winchester that one Martin V, Wil son was taken sick and sent to the hos pital at Winchester. This and some oth er thing in connection is what X wish to write about. -. tas" - - Te heard nothing from Wilson until the following winter while In camp at Millwood elation on the Richmond and Fredericksburg Railroad. Capt. Latham received a letter from a doctor then sta tlonedat Guinea station, (I do not re member the Drs. name) saying that Wilson was in his charge at Winchester While sick, that he died there and that he left tome persona effects In the Doc tor's charge which he would be pleased to deliver to Capt. Latham : or any one whom he would, send for them. I was tent by ; the Captain for the articles which were duly received from the Doe tor and by me carried to Capt. Latham, thence they were sent to Wilson's widow in Wake county, It, miles Southwest of Raleigh she hss the articles now. Now out Roster does' not show the name of said Wilson at all, therefore his widow it deprived of the pension intended for her by the State;1 (Ffiear there are many such cases.)'; Could not the pension law be amended, to that such case could be, reached by proper proof being presented to the proper authorities; 'i . .- I feel sad to think that our records are In such bad shape. I have aeen a list ot names of soldier burled at Winchester but do not find the name of At. V. Wli oj tmocg them, though it ought to be there. No doubt tbe name wss destroyed before the "Ladles Association" took the cemetery in charge. Perhaps I should stop, but I find the "Rotter" deficient In another instance, the writer's name It not there. This how ever is ot no consequence at there it no pentlon. I shall not kick. There are some New Bern boys,, if living, who have not forgotton me. Such as Old Sergt, Bryan, Wm. Green, Charlie Green Nath Titdale, flag bearer Chas. Thomas. Mart Bterenson who used to toot us np at all odd times at night with his old battered horn. We halted oue day at Southauna river up ' north of Hanover Court House expecting an attack from the eaemy who wee advancing on Rich1 mond after the Wilderness battle.:. Oar horse wete detached nd tent to the rear for ta!ety. I think Stevenson ,'wat in cha.ge, sure enough the attack was made on our force at the bridge and we being In line with the shells which passed over our battery were very much exposed, so much so "that we ha1 change our ' position, thus Interfering wlin the writing of a lore letter., ii - Now It was Mid that oar bugler hail tweetheatt '.in the neighborhood Bouthanna river bridge on the old lei graph road, so While were waiting fur the fight to come on Stephenson seated himself at the root of a very large oak with his face toward th bridge and was busily eneaied la-writing when the (hell commenced to drop among a Stephenson very deliberately changed hla position to tbe opposite tide of the tree. . Noticing the chsnge I remsrked to him that be might, state the fact to h's lady-love that be was now behind tree. Hit only answer to me was: "Be damn do."" , v ' ' I could fill many pages with reminis cences of the boys of New Bern, Swift creek, Core creek, Beaufort, Hatteras, Wilmington, etc but few If any of them will ever see this.
