General Buller has sent the following dispatch to the War Office, under date of Bpearmans Camp, Natal, January 2S.10 a. m. ;- General Warren ocoupled Spion Kop last night, surprising a small garrison, who fled." ,:'.. - , - ' . "The position was held by us all day yesterday, though we - were , heavily attacked, there-was especially a very an noying shell fire. ' ' ' , - "I fear that oar .casualties are con siderable. I regret to Inform you that General Woodgate is dangerously wound ed. " - ' : "General Warren Is of the opinion that he has rendered the enemy's 'posi tion untenable. Our men are splendid.'? London, Jan. 25 It Is reported that the British, losses, Including wounded, in the two daya preceding the capture of 8plon Kop were six thousand men. . Bplon h.op, which la regarded as the key to the Boer position, Is the hlgbett part of a rocky plateau. Eastward for eight miles are the Boer positions along the Tugela. Northwestward from Spion Kop the plateau runs gradually up to a great spur of the -Drakensburg. Gen eral Warren's Infantry, to reach the sum mit of Sploa Kop had to cross an apon plain three quarters of a. mile wide and ollmb 500 Toet up a steep slope. - o ' The attack on Spion Kop, It Is believ ed here, was simultaneously delivered on two aides,, from Trlcbard'a drift1 and from Potgteter's drift, by Warren's dl vjslor and Lyttleton'a - brigade. - The Uritlsb force directly: available for the assault was about 80,003 men. ., All these would not-likely bq put into action at once. - Probably the assailing line would not be stronger thaa 5,000 men to be fol lowed by strong supports. . i t ' The Daily Mall said In anticipation of the attack: "As to the probability of suocess we cannot speak. : Let us hope for .the best and prepare 'for the worat. The operation ia one of great difficulty aud hazard. Fourteen hundred yards or Steeply sloping ground has to be covered before the- Boer positions are reached. Entanglements of the kind employed at Magersfonteln will no doubt be found Immedlatelpln front of the Boer works. II failure follows It may become neces sary to give notice that no foreign in tervention will be permitted,' and the necessary steps to support a Warning of this kind should be taken without de- ' Tnesday's BatUe. - . ' ' Londob, January 24 The Dally Tele graph has received the following dis patch from South Africa: - ' Spearman's Camp, Natal, January M 8:30 p. m. On Monday , General ..War ren's force continued the cannonade and fusillade of the Boer positions west of Spion kop, near the Acton Homes road. A lyddite battery co-operated "wl'h other batteries and Maxim guns. Tbelr fire was effective, causing the Boers, It is believed, serious losses. The Boers clung desperately to their works. ' . ' .-' Today the Boera fired their, guns less frequently. The Btitlsh losses were more even than In yesterday'a action.. The fighting began about 8 o'clock this morning and continued until dark, but there has been nothing like a general engagement. The naval guns assisted from Potglcter'a drift In shelling the Boer positions. At Coloibarg. RnNsstmo, Cape Oolony, January 28 A trustworthy authority estimates the Boer force at Coleaburg under Comman dants Delsry and Scheman at 6,000. The Boers are short of provisions and forage, aud find tbelr supplies coming through with difficulty, owing to British guns commamllnir the approaches to Colosberg. The Free Btators are disinclined te continue lighting in Cape Colony, but all the Iloers exprcxs determination to make a stand at Orange river. Iltmvy Itliifnroeillnt.
