Naw Yotta, luly 1 It ts believed that about 200 lives were loBt snd 800 per sons were injured in the great fire at the era of the North German Lloyd steam ship company at Hoboken, N. J , which broke out at 4 p. m. yesterday and was still burning throughout Sunday night . The fire started among cotton "bales from an unknown cause,' In less than minutes it covered an area a quarter a mile long, extending outward from the actual shore line to- the bulkheads, from 600 to 1,000 feet aw&yv It caught four s;reat ocean liners and a dozen or more smaller harbor craft In its grasp. - The damage to property ia estimated about $8,000,000, distributed as f ol. The steamship Main,, of the North German Lloyd Line, The loss is placed at $1,200,000 for the vessel and about $400,000 for the fitting, stores and cargo that were aboard of her, : - The Bremen. also of the : North Ger man Lloyd Line.- The cargo and stores were entirely consumed, and the loss to the vessel proper will amount to at least $700,000. She is beached off Wee hswken and still smoldering, apparently destroyed except for her machinery, The Saale. this steamship, will have the most horrible story of death to un fold when the divers go down lu her. She Is beached at Ellis Island and still nrnlng. The damage Is placed at about 80o,ooo. The damage done to the Kaiser Wit' helm deGrosse Is estimated at $35,000. The three docka of the North German Lloyds Line, which 'were ' burned to the water's edge, are estimated to have cost $300,000. Tbev .were well filled with merchandise just received from abroad which was valued at $350,000: ' - - The Thlnvalls pier, which, was con sumed, was valued at $50,000 counting the stores which were on it. v. . The Hamburg-American Line dock waa iiamaged $15,000. This was the only loss which the Hamburg-American com. psny sustained, as the steamer Phmnicla contrary to early reports, waa not even soorohed,.!.":- ' - " ' -v" Four warehouses af Palmer - Campbell were barned. Mr. Campbell said that ha eould pot give a definite estimate of his losses but the damage to the buildings alone woull amount to at least $50,000 and the contents $1,250,000 Had the Are occurred at any other lime of the year, be said, the loss would bars been much greater, as just at present the import are light and the houses were not filled, This statement also accounts for the comparatively . small loss on the three piers on the North German Lloyd Line. One lighter, containing 8.000 bags of sugar, was destroyed, l tie loss Being $27,000. , ' Eight barges and 11 canal boats were either burned or sunk With their cargoes Their total valuation was $125,000. ' The Hoboken Shore Railroad had number of cars burned and other prop erty damaged. Its loss tl $7,000. Minor losses on floating ' property, burned at the fire or set aflame by burn Ing drift Wood, will amount 4o about $30,000. :i -j;:- -SQl More Soldiers to Takn, Chinese De feat.
