The Charlotte Observer of the 7th Inst., says editorially that It cannot sup port WOUant J.. Bryan, the oomloee ef the Democratic National party, 'nor the platform promulgated at Kansas City, by the name party. . , To those familiar with the Observer and Its political standing before the Democratic .National Democratic coa veaUon of 18M, at Chicago, and llseo- sltioa since oa National questions, talk announcement, this repudiation of the - Democratic National party as It stands today caa cause no surprise. To state It bluntly, the Observer has , ooenpled no positive position oa Na tional politics since before the Chicago . -convention In 1896. '-. - , Bryan and free coinage of silver at It to 1, have been foreign to the Ob . server, end utterly repugnant to its po- ' llttoal tuiirfr- ; -' But feeling that borne Internets, the . supremacy of, the white man In North . Carolina affairs to be s most vital point . at state, has no doubt held the Observer back from taking its political departure . before this time. ;;vv;''' "' The Joubkal while believing In and thoroughly appreciating the motives which .have Impelled the ' Obser. ver to' make Irs bold' stand, ' canooi bat feel that the present time was most unpropllous for such ' a . departure, and the Journal deplores the aotloa of the Observer. " ' i-.nC-''" However much the Observer may dep. recate Its poUtloal UBueneeend Weight, there Is no gainsaying that a newspaper of Us standing must have considerable. And to thus make a radical change, i few weeks before a Bute election, on envolvlng the political freedom of the r it. i i a I 1- H'-l i 11 I l white t a tf J,o. t,.; .i,cii-.t bit bet" J in i; i! t . :. acy 'Au, 3. Fvery real i ..ws ;er must reflect L.e oplulun In some measure, of Its city. Ha Slate and Ita reading constituency. The Observer may say It does not re flect public opinion, but that cannot alter the fact that it ahould prove a bulwark for Ita patrons, which means Its city, county and State, against the evils which threaten then. . To be this bulwark, It meat be thor oughly cognizant of public affairs and public opinion, and so be able to deter mine and to sound the warnnlga which shall put Iti people on their guard against approaching dangers. There fore, to repeat, the Observer's political announcement of departure at this time is. In the Joubmaib opinion, a most un fortunate one, for Its force for the real of the campaign, la the cause of White Supremacy must be a negative one, and at this time every positive' force for the amendment la . needed and demanded that It may be carried. v PnNic Speaklnf.
