Durham Grow- tnff. x CnaPEL Hill, N. C, Dec 12. Chapel j Hill is soon to be connected with Dur ham and other points by telephone, the work having already begun. Also a trolley line from here to Durham is being seriously considered. Improvements are continually being made in the University plant. In addi tion to the Carr building, the gift of Oeneral Julian 8. Carr and now being occupied for the first lime, tho Alumni building is in course of erection both handsome buildings and another large building will soon be erected by Zachary & Zachary. architecls, Raleigh, N,. C. Also the University water works will soon be in activeoperation. Extensive and helpful Improvements have lately been made in the Prebyterian church, costing some $2,000. Besides other changes, electric lights have been put In, new oak pews, full carpet, fur nace and stained glass windows, Thanksgiving and celebration services to mark the completion of these im provements were held Saturday night and Sunday morning. Saturday nigh Itev. A. R Shaw, pastor of the Presby terian church at Henderson, N. The Presbyterians, with their Improved placo of worship, are now very much encouraged having a very neat and attractive church the neatest In tho village. The present pastor. Rev. A traveling man sny& it dues more business than any place of its size In the United Stales. The American Tobacco Company has within the past few days completed Its thirteenth ware house there and now ItB warehouses cover more than eight acres of ground. Two very large new cotton mills are un der construction at the suburb known as Edgemont, while extensive additions to the Krwln and East Duiham cotton tniils are being built. Chicago, Dec. 10 A test Is being made by the Lake Shore aud Michigan Southern Road with s eel ties. The company, like all other", is continually replacing old steel rails with new. No other practical use has been found for 'he old rails, and il has now been de cided to try them for ties in place of wood. Under the proces the old rails a'e rc rolled to flatten the heads. Several mouths ago a number of these steel rail were placed undej the track of the Sandusky Div slon, and a careful exami nation made last week with a gauge showed that the steel ties had not allowed the gauge of the track to change a particle Bince they were laid. The first three oak ties on each side were also exact, while the fourth, fifth, and sixth wooden lies had widened to a con siderable extent Tho Lake Shore people are pleased with the result of the test, it is Bail! that these ties can be much better tamped than wooden ones and that with steel ties tho track may be maintained unore evenly. The average life of a wo' den lie is six years. The Chlel Eugineer of the Lake Shore says he sees no reason why ties of steel should not last twenty-five ydlirs before deterlor atlng to an eiteul to necessitate renew al. t j i. m- u it : Ecar. t llie Kind Y-iu Haw Wiwys Bought Davis' Phaimary'relln and rerommcnil Celery Headache Powder and Jordan's ough Hlstin .
