Committee to Report On Criminal Insane. What the Lawyers Got. jOdd Fellows Have a Big Tear. Special to Journal. KALKiony.Dec. 14. A letter from Mll- too, Granville county, says 8 new cases of small pox have developed. Quite a large section is now under quarantine and the schools closed. There appears to be no doubt that the Infection came from cotton bagging. The legislative committee has" com pleted its examination of the office of the Slate treasurer. Its report to the legislature is made up. As stated it will refer to the legislature the matter of the payment by the treasurer of the back salary of shellnsu commissioner White, upon mandamus by the Republican mem burs of the Supreme court. The legisla ture will decide whether it will deal with the treasurer or the court. The committee will also report to the legislature the payment of money for the mactainance of the criminal Insane, who are kept in the wings of the pen) tentlary. The legislature thought it had passed the bill making this appropria tion, but it did not pass It. State treas urer World said today: -'I paid $300 last year and a like amount this year for i be support of the criminal Insane. The legislators did not pass the bill In 1899. Superintendent Kirby of the insane asy luni, who has control of the criminal in sane, appeared before the council of Stale aud asked that an advance of the above Bum be made. The council di rccted me to advance it and to carry ii as a catdi item. The legislature thought it had passed the law giving $300 a year. 1 asked Senator Brown to have it passed :nt June but be said there was not time mil that as I had paid out the money the iiiatter might as well go on until next year." The amount paid Cor counsel fees, etc. ')) t tie Mate during the pan two years is a Utile over $21,000. Perhaps a lot of ibis was paid because of Gov. KusscU'a llsllke to Attorney General Walser. the latter was always snubbed by the Uovcmor and was allowed to cut no Ogure lu the Slate's suits. Itcpresenlatlve J. Frank Ray of Ma cm county says gold, mica and gem minlug is very active there. Oruit regret Is eipreasod here at the IcaMi si Haw Klver of Charloa T. All the available mounted infantry at Aldershot, at the island of Malta and at other military centres were today ordered rushed to South Africa. Vienna, Dec 13. In well Informed circles In this city persons are inclined to give credence to private aispatchts from London to the effect that the con clusion of peace in south Africa is much nearer than reports indicate. It is regarded as possible that Mr. Kruger will draw decided conclusions from the course of events in South Af rica and tbe experiences he has had in Europe. Reports have -also been re celved here to the effect thai be is try ing to arrange an Interview wilh Lord Salisbury. In view of the moderation of Joseph Chamberlain's latest speech it is not considered Impossible that such a meeting should take place. ue will's Lime Early Kisers are dainty little pllla, but they never fail to cleanse tbe liver, remove obstructions and invigorate the system.
