Dec. 17. -At the recent session of the North Carolina Confer-' ence held In New Bern, Bishop Morrison wanted to change Dr. E. A. Yates from the position of presiding elder of this district and put him in charge of the Wilmington dUtrict. Dr. Tates Is out In a card In regard to the matter, which haa cansed considerable talk, In which he saya that for "reasons which I prefer not to discuss" at this lime, he refused the appointment and was ma le "nomi nal" pastor of Main Street Church in this city. The people generally believe that he was treated wrong. In his card Dr. Yates explains the matter as follows: '1 had determined to not write a line about recent events touching my own connection with the conference appoint ments, but to set the conference right 1 have concluded to make this brief expla nation: I am not an 'assistant' at Mtln Street churbb. My positlo i in oar nomenclature, is called a 'nominal ap pointment,' that is no work and no pay Again the 'conference' did not -make the appointment. Tbat is wholly the bishop's prerogative. The 'conference' could not control it and had nothing to do with it. The 'conference' practically was nnanimoua upon my side of the whole matter an exceedingly small num ber votlug against my resolution. The bishop simply determined to put me on the Wllmini$tot diairlr.t for reasons which I prof er n t to dis -ms no.
