A resolution for ventilating the Legis
lation Halls was adopted, there being
now an utter absence of ventilation A

the charges of extravagance and padding

Hallway.
Bills were introduced in the House to
establish a dispensary at Winston; .to
prohibit the Supreme Court from licens
ing the negroes as lawyers; to prohibit
the raising of peanuts on State Peniten

that this depreciates the price of peanuts

Court devoted today to the examination
of applicants for license as attorneys.
Of these there were 88. It will be about
week before the result Is made known,
the examination Is in writing and
all the papers have to be looked over.
A bill It before the Legislature author
izing the issue of the third $100,000 for
Raltlgh atreet improvements. An effort
will be made to so amend the bill that
$10,000 of the amount may be used for
an auditorium.
The railways have, as stated, settled
their tax assessment cases. The legisla
tors are well pleased at the settlement.
The Western Union telegraph's case Is
yet In the courts. It is assessed at $1,-
000,000, but under order of court only
pays taxes on $600,000. It also pays 2
per cent tax on gross receipts.
Raleigh will have three special theat
rical attractions next week, Hay Irwin,
Eric Hope (the Karl of Yarmouth) and
the Bostonians.
State Treasurer Lacy tells me he has
sent letters to 00 banks, designating
them aa State'deposltories, and tellirg
them that as such they must deposit col
lateral In amounts ranging from $2,000
to $21,000, and that his drafts on the
banks most be remitted without cost lo
the State. Replies are rapidly coming
In, saying this arrangement Is satisfac
tory. The State Treasurer wished to ascer
tain, for the legislative finance commit

tax amounts to In North Carolina. He
wrote the commissioner of internal rev
