In tha Impeach ment case, at the morning session, ex- Judge W. P. Bynum, jr., opened for the defense, speaking three hours. Strict at tention was paid to his careful argu ment. Mr. Bynum said the case resolved it self, first, have the Justices violated the constitution of North Carolina; second, if they have, was such violation with wilful Intent. The White case was reviewed from the beginning, and Mr. Bynum said that the 'doctrine that office was property had stood for sixty years, and that White's salary was not a claim against the -tale, In the reputed meaning of the claim. At the three o'clock session, Chief Justice Furches took the witness stand, and under questions of bis counsel, gave a history of the case, containing some Interesting details concerning Chief Justice CUrk. He denied that any de cisions had 1)een made for political rea sons. While Mr. Furches was undei exami nation by the prosecution, the court ad' jjurned until tomorrow. While many of the Senators express tbeir belief that the trial will end with this week, yet there is quite an idea that it will go over into next week. Crops. Clerk Martin's Steal lags. L' glalatnre Uad Too Many Employes For Work Needed. Kai.mou, March 18. The extent of the pi operation of lands for crops lu this section is astonishing. It is said that never before was so much ploughing and clearing of lands done by Mtrch 18. The Legislature has enacted a law for Free libraries for the public schools. The school at Pineville, Mecklenburg oua'.y, bs the honor of being the flist to make formal application to the State Superin tendent, under this law. It is found lo be true that Mnj. Martin tbe defaulting ex-clerk of the State t eiaury, stole all I ho penitentiary vjuohere for 1900. The State treasurer ha gone back as far as June 27. 1899 in Martin's accounts. H found $508 stn'eu In November, 1900. Martin said he had made later stealings to cover up former nil's When ex-treasurer Worth asked Irm if. he had begun stealing as soon as no went Into tbe ornoe, tour ye.trs ago, be said be couldn't remember It is said by one of tbe most promi nent men in tbe State that Chairman Simmous, who is always like an electric force, was tbe "malnsprlug of this pros ecution;'' that the plan and Inception of it were his, and that he had "vitalized" It. This was a very high compliment to his ability as a nerving force, whatever may be said as to tbe good or bad Judg ment in instituting such a proceeding. The chairman Is on the ground daily. The Legislature had too many em ployes. It was a source of amuBemen at tbe session lust ended lo see what a lot of drones there were as employes. Some were active, but some did not earn their salt. The dirty halls and rotunda and passsgeways told the story of their idleness. These were "partv" workers This was their reward. It has been the story ever since 189, when the writer began reporting the legislative proceed ings. Tbe regular people In the capital therefore rejoice at the end of ths session so that they may get things clean. SMALL SUGAR CURED Pig Hams A nice lot Just Received.
