Raleigh, April S The Legislature met in adjourned union at noon today with two 3enaton and twelve Repre- sentatlve present, In the Senate Chief Clark Maxwell called the Senate to order and called Sen ator Glenn to the chair. In the Houbc Speaker Moore presided. He had not expected to attend and was not looked or, but he finally came be cause, as he said, it was necessary to pass a few local bills and amend some of the acts passed by the Legislature in the March session. Some of these bills had been overlooked and they were consid ered necessary to be passed. The following bills were passed today. A bill allowing the Governor to appoint Superior Court Judges and Solicitors under the new law any time after March Uth. A bill to publish the impeachment trial proceedings In full including the arguments of the counsel. A bill to allow the Qoldsboro Lumber Company to Increase its capital stock to three hundred thousand dollars. A bill to allow the people of Mitchell county to vote on the question of com pulsory attendance at school. Senator London, President pro tem of the Senate, could not arrive today, ow Ing to a railway washout and bene, no bills could be ratified. A resolution to adjourn at 2 o'clock had been adopted but it had to be reconsidered and a re cess was taken until noon tomorrow when final adjournment will probably be taken. April 8 Todsy J A Brown and N. O'Berry of the new penitentiary directorate went to the penitentiary and look charge. They at once began Inventory. They will se what is lbs system, what Is nrceaiary to be done, etc. Meantime there will be no changes In the personnel. Directors Travis, Grasslands and Maon left this morning for lbs penitentiary farms on lbs Roan oka river, to make an Inspection, take an inventory, etc Senator Brown think the work will take a month's time. Kalgiok, April 8 The Investigation of the penitentiary books, etc., In the State treasury by the special legislative committee, of which Senator Arrington is chairman, began this morning. The statement has been made that the t Lefts of Maj. Martin, the ex-clerk, aggregate $15,000. The treasurer says Ihls sti'e- ment is unauthorized. No one has any idea what will be the amount. Martin aays about $3800, an expert told the grand jury it was $13,000, the penitenti ary officials figure on something like $8200. The trial of W. H. Martin, the de faulting ex-clcrk, was the event in the superior court today. It has always been said ho would submit, though lately he has employed two lawyers. He has rltten all over the country to gei money. It Is Deileved ne would nave fled if he had had money at the time o the discovery of bis crime. All the penitentiary vouchers for five years sr. gone. The jail here is to be enlarged, or else re-arrangei so as to give female prison era entirely different quarters. State treasurer Lacy says that 30 sher iffs have failed to make settlements and 80 others have only made pirllal settle ments. There may be suits. B. E. Sedborry of Fayetleville died re cently and It Is found msde a bequest to the M. K. Orphanage here. There ia a great rush of Northern peo ple to Pinehurat. The hotels there are full. The information given by the commls sloner of agriculture that this season s fertilizer sales are 80 per cent greater than last year's to this date, is of much Interest. IUlkioh, April 8. -The total fire loss here during the year ended February 28, was $21,830, with $18603 insurance. Of the loss $17,500 waa with Millardvllle hosiery mill, In February. There were 51 alarms during the year; 8 false. The total expense of the fire department waa $11291. The report waa made up today by fire chief L. A. Mahler.
