respondents this week Indicate fnrthee

and although sever mornings were
quite cool, -there were no extremes.
Showers were frequent, occurring at
some Station or other on almost . every
day of the week. In' spile of some very
heavy local rains, the average rainfall
was about normal and' wae0Uremely
beneficial. " The soli was phced In excel
lent condition for plowing, the germina
tion of seeds was hastened, and vegeta
tion refreshed. Toward tl:e latter part
of the Week farm work was interrupted
tn some sections and Weeds and, grass
became, troublesome, but generally
farmers aro fairly well up with their
work. - The unfortunate feature of the
weather this week was the .- unusually
Urge number of severe local thunder
storms with heavy hail, chiefly from the
7th to 10th.:; At many points the hall
stones were quite largo and covered the

Tbe greatest damago occurred in the
strawberry region of southern North
Carolina. Truck crops and garden vege
tables were Injured; corn, ' cotton, and
tobacco somewhat " cut;' "wheat fields
lodged, and fruit beaten from the trees.

damage occurred were, in the Eastern
District: Wayne, Nasb, Wilson, Pender
Sampson, and Urcene. in the Central
District; Wake, Johnson, Franklin,
Moore, Richmond, Forsythe, Guilford.

well, Catawba, Polk, Davie, and Iredell
The bulk of the cotton crop has now
been sown. Late planted cotton Is com
ing up well, and fair stands seem assured
by the beneficial rains this week; some
fields are grassy and working the crop
has begun; in southern counties some
chopping has been done. There is still
much corn Jo be replanted on account of
bad stands; the condition 0?" corn that U
up Is much Improved. Fine' seasons
enable farmers to transplant many to-
bscco plants, especially in eastern and
southern portions) elsewhere the plants
are still too small ior the purpose.
Planting peanuts Is underway, and plant
Ing rice has made good progress. Gar

Bern for the next two years. Where
upon bo came forward, qualified and
