The sheriff' of Halifax today broagM 7 eooTlcts to the penitentiary, - Three of these, are safe blowers, who blew open Stalling 4 Co's. safe at Littlfltoa. They are white men, two from West Virginia and one from.Pennsylvantaj John Wilson, who served a term In the federal prison here and at Nashville, and gets 17 years; Rob ert Fulton 10i years; James White 17 years. They were captured the day af ter their crime, at Halifax, arrested on suspicion and tools and dynamite and articles stolen at Littleton' found on them: Mrs. Virginia M. Simpson died at her home here this morning, of apoplexy. Her age was 74. She was the relict of George W. Simpson who died In 1884 She was a daughter of the Hon. Bart lett Yancey one of the greatest men this State has produced. Her husband was a native of Virginia but at an early age made his home in Caswell county, of which Mrs. Simpson was a native. She was a devoted member of the Baptist church and It Is understood that she has given liberally of hei large means to that denomination. The case against attorney A. J. Mar. shall of Wilmington Is yet on the docket in the federal court here. No one can say whether it will or will not come up for trial at the approaching term. It Is predicted here by some of the baseball experts that Portsmouth is the "comlug teamr in the league and that it is dead sure to go to the top. It doe not appear that Rtleigh is aoy match for the Wilmington team. No better Hold ing than that of the latter team has been seen on the grounds here. Tomorrow evening Gov. Aycock will deliver an address at St. Paul's A. M. E church here, the dedicatory services of which are occupying all the week. One may be sure he will give his auditors good advice as regards their moral and material advancement. The statement that the penitentiary Issues have hard.tlmo to pull through this year proves entirely true The superintendent expects to have, to bor row money and very' frankly telU me so. Mr. Mano does not yet know bow much he will need. A school census In the country 'In this county shows there are 10 white and 84 negro children who can not road tad write. . Ralsioh, May 16. The Agriculture department had made all the preliminary arrangements for an exhibit at Charlotte Raleigh, of the track and berries of eastern North Carolina, at no expense to the growers, the idea being to develop a market In central and wustern North Carolina. The truckers failed to cooperate and the plan has to be abandoned. The claim of the truckers la they (re too busy. It Is one of their greatest mistakes, as Ih y will discover. Of course they will never again have an opportunity. Thoy would not even reply to the dupart- raent's inquiries. Only ono showed a knowledgo of the need for a home market. GEDDY., May 14th.
