been allowed to see him exoept Mr. Mo

not see the President until after return-

sat beside his bed only a few minutes.
When Mrs. McKlnley vlslta the Presl

they passed the minutes showed them to

possible for i few of his most Intimate
friends to see him. Mrs. McKinhsy wOl
be allowed to visit Mm at more frequent
Intervals, and gradually he will be
brought back Into touch with the world's
doings.
During the visits Of Mrs. McKlnley to
the President's bedside there has been
no discussion of the attempted assassi
nation. Mrs. McKlnley is in possession
of all the facts connected with It. Soon
after the President was taken from the
Exposition grounds to the Mltburn resi
dence Dr. Bixey told hor all about the
details. The news was broken as gent
ly as possible, but no effort was made to
coaceal the main facts. i
The strength, courage and cheerful
ness of Mrs. McKlnley continue to be
the marvel of those who know her best,
bnt they have feared she would by this
time break down nnder the strain. Yet
she seems stronger and never has been
more self-contained and cheerful than
when she visited the President this
afternoon.., it, '

Four convicts wet brought to the

dialog. There are now only 773 State
convicts, bnt Httle over half the number
14 years ago. The greatest number was

xne whole people are in sorrow over
the shooting of President McKlnley, and
and the universal expression of opinion
it that oar legislators should pass severe
ana drastic laws to put down anarchism
which they say It increasing at a fearful
rate In this country, all of whieh
think It true, and right here by way of
parenthesis would add, that the peopli
themselves are responsible to no small
degree for this condition of affairs. All
classes of people, for while some are
guilty of commissions, others are guilty
of omissions. Public sentiment must bo
more subservient to the laws of the land
mUBt treat law with all respect and
reverence, as Jurors must act justly, and
do justice, must convict the guilty and
acquit the innocent, in both cases acting
without fear, favor or partlsanism re
ward or hope of reward, and those en
trusted with the execution of the laws-
should with Btern justice execute them
in the same manner, and lastly not by
any means the least however, the peopli
who alone have the power, should select
as law makers, those who are rospectors
of law themselves, and not violators of
law. One of the reasons that has caused
the law to be violated with so much Im
punity, thoy make a law and then don't re
spect It,settlng the example the multitude
follows, and the sole power to romedy
this evil Is In the hands of the people
and probable three-fourths of them are
In some way or other violators of the
law. Now what's the remedy "Birds
of a feather will flock together," there Is
a remedy, a plain and simple remedy,
The Kinston Free Press, brother, seems
to have gone In the ring stripped to the
belt, over the base ball game, and doesn'
mind who he gives the lie to, male or fe
male, old or young, good, bad or lndlffer
ent. Wo know nothing of the matter,
but from the wholesale manner In which
the Free Press gives the He, we would
Imagine that there were no ladies or
gentlemen among the crowd that went
from New Beern to witness the game.
and wo hardly think this can be true.
Surely there must have been some peo
ple of character that went from New
Bern on that occasion. If there was
then the only apology that the Free
Preis man could offer, would be, to In
sert at the head of his paper, the follow
Ing in big letters, "We Are A Crank,
We Don't Know What Decent Journal-
Ism Means, We Are Not Rannlng A De
cent Journal, We Are Publishing a Pa
per For The Roughs and Toughs Of The
Country Only to Read." With this an
nouncement no lady or gentleman could
or would take offence at anything that
appeared In its colums; they would con
slder Its source.
The Board of School Directors of this
county met here yesterday to consider
the consolidating of two school districts
the Bayboro and btonewall districts in
order that the free school might be
taught at the Pamlico, Male and Female
Academy In connection with that school
A petition signed by a large majority of
the tax payers, and patrons of the free
schools In both districts was presented
to the Board asking for this, stating that
by to doing the people 'could get a lon
ger term of school, taught about 10
months and a better service than if
taught separate, "that the farther child
from the academy In the consolidated
district was lest than one and a half
mile. . For some reason the school Di
rector refused to- grant the request of
petitioners. , We presume they did It In
the beet Interest of public education.
