Then It consider able railway construction In the State. Among the lines may be mentioned Ap- palaobU Short Line, 10 miles In opera tion, 8 miles under construction; the Atlanta, KnozTille & Northern's 10 mile branch to Appalachia, nearly com pleted. The Carolina & North Western long the Chester & Lenoir narrow gauge Is being made standard gauge ljjfi miles, Chester to Lenoir. About 10 miles of the Charlotte, Monroe and Columbia It completed; this to be a branch er con necting link of the Seaboard Air Line. The fast Tennessee & Western N. C. has completed 12 miles of its extension from Montezuma Tla Morganton to Lin- colnton, 65 miles. Eight miles of 88 of the Fayetterllle & Albemarle Is graded from Southern Pines eastward. Of the Moore County & Weston 80 miles is completed. The Norfolk & Weston is building three branches Into this State; one into Ashe county and two Into Alle ghany; two to reach Iron ore beds, and one to reach factories. The Beaufort county lumber company is building a 85 mile line from Greenville to Vanceboro. Good progress Is being made In the sur vey of the 90 mile road from Winston to Wadesboro. Attorney General Qllmor saj a the no table case against the tnree "gold brick" swindlers, now In Greensboro jail, will will be argued in the Supreme Court next Tuesday. The case is of special In terest, as it Is the first of Its kind in this State. The evidence la conclusive. A Chicago lawyer will appear for the swindlers. These aro the men who tried to victimize Paul Garrett of Weldon, who so admirably trapped them. The contract for the $25,000 main building at the Methodist Orphanage here is to be soon awarded but the work will hardly begin beforo next Spring. It had been the hope to have work begin in September. The Adjutant General today sent out iho last of the warrants In full settle ment of the claims for expenses Incurred In the mobilization of the volunteers he in 1898. The mourning for President McElnloy remains on the government building here until Oct. 19, a unnth after the bu rial at Canton. The flag will remain at half-staff until the same date. All other mourning has been removed. The &tat charters the Martin county telephone company, of Wllllamston, capital $25,000.. Half a dozen articles arrived today for the State Fair. One Is "Oliver W." a noted "trotter." All the officials are surprised at the emallness of the number of pensions in the new roll. The auditor was sure i month ago there would be 10,000, Est! mates run from 9500 to 10,000. There are only 8627. Similar riots, in which several persons were killed, occurred at Anderwetka, where two land owners have been murdered, and also at Pes trawka and elsewhere In the tame dis trict" : The Vienna Neues Abend-Blatt re ports that there has been rioting in Klcheneff, Bessarabia, where 1,000 sta dents attacked and wrecked the house of the Government, the headquarters of the police and the office of the Official Ga zette.
