The Aaaaal College Debate. Balbigh. Dec. 6. An officer arrived fhere today with Charles Blackwell, white, a desperate convict, who was seat to the penitentiary 4 years ago from Gaston county for the murder of John Foster, served 23 months and escaped from one of the convict farms. Since then he has peen hldlag In the moun tains on the line between North and 8outh Carolina, In company with maay other criminals from both States. The cold weather forced him to leave the mountains and caused.hls capture. ' At last the U. 8. Fidelity and Guaran ty Company has filed Its answer In the suit against it for some $15,000 stolen by MaJ. W. H. Martin while a clerk In the office of ex-State Treasurer W. H. Worth. It Is the first word from the company since Worth, made demand on It last April, not long after Martin's de falcation was discussed. The company says Worth to whom Martin was bonded failed to keep his agreement, that he put no check upon Martin; that he failed to examine Martin's books and accounts as required; that worth warranted the accuracy of Martin's accounts. Hence the company denies that It has any liability. The case will be tried In the Superior Court here in February. This will be a pretty legal fight. Mrs. T. D. Bratton, wife of the rector of St. Mary's Female College hero, has pneumonia. Arrivals at Southern Pines, Pine- hurst and Pine Bluff are now numerous The cottages are rapidly filling. The season promises to be even better than last year's notably good one. The Supreme Court will next week hear arguments in fire State cases which came over from last term. A bazaar Is being held here In aid of St. Mary's college here. There Is yet a debt of $10,000 remaining on the 80, 000 which the college cost.
