William A. Gavin, of Samson county, died today in the Soldiers Home here, sged 70. He went there 4 months sgo with cancer. He wss in the 51st regiment. State superintendent of public instruc tion Joyner returned here today after three weeks Bluets at GreenBboro. The crops In three-fourths of the area ot this county are suffering for rain. Today warrants for libraries for rural publlo schools were sent out to Harnett, Moore and Halifax counties. As yet 19 counties, among them so Important a county as Buncombe, hare not made ap plication for these libraries. Arrangements are now being made to Instal motive power for the machinery In the textile building at the Agricultu ral and Mechanical College. For lack of such power the machinery could not be operated last session. Judge and Mrs. Purnell have gone to wylbevllle, Vs., to remain three weekr. The baseball enthusiasts here are de lighted with the work of the players who have gone to the Bouthern league from the North Carolina league. All have done well and their playing shows how fast the State league was in 1901-02. The outlook for a good tobacco mar ket here was never so promising ss at present. Buyers are arriving. The sea son will open regularly next Friday. There Is complaint by officials here and by the general publlo as well that inebriates are received at the Insane asylum, while meritorious lnsanesare excluded. The esse of a man now In Jail here Illustrates the complaint. It Is said the asylum Is overcrowded. "Hake room; It can be made," say the county officials. Simmons, who has done such magni ficent and successful work In four politi cal campaigns will 'decline reelection next Tuesday, when the State committee meets here. It Is also rumored that Jamea Richard Toung will be the new chairman, Toung Is now chairman of the committee of this congressional district and Is a very able and successful politician.
