Bach a palatable tonic must at once quench the thirst and also revivify the energy that has become dulled by the high tempera ture of the. blood. To satisfy these requirements many kinds of drinks are offered the public, such as lemonade, composed principally of tartaric acid and water, the carbona ted product known as soda water, that Is so difficult for the stomach to assimi late, and very many more, that oar limi ted space does not permit enunerv usage has decided that a malted beverage best supplies the proper stimulation to give a tonic strength, to overcome summer lassitude. Following np this clue the reporter Visited fn 'Imagination, the scene of death and" desolation; .The beautiful terra cottalrailding which only a week ago was the pride of oar city was a smoking, unrecognizable heap of brick. Of course all the building contained was Included In the order, so, of coarse the expensive office furniture of the United States Court room, the custom offlorrj rooms and the post office Itself waa In cluded in the order to burn, a they might contain some of the deadly email pox germs. Surrounding the ruins waa a railing made of rope and a half dozen guards armed with Winchester rifles and their doty was to keep the public away from the rains on account of possible fears of contamination. The reporter who was leaning against the ropes and was 15 or 20 feet awsy from the pile, saw a strange looking ob ject coming out of the hot brick and stones. It had a lizard like appearance and though very small waa very lively and was not seen but about a minute at a time. It was about six Inches long and bad a covering of hard greenish black scales, a long flattened head with b vicious mouth and, small eyes of a bright last re. It had six feet and a short tall, every thing about the animal seemed to tally with the natural history descrip tion of the smallest kind of 11 sards. Bat this creature that came out from the stones so audaciously was proclaimed by 0 well known scientist to be a very good Sped men of small pox germ. When it Waa known that there were still living germs in the mint of the building which had been burned to kill them, the people Wert thoroughly discouraged and thought that fate was against them. The spectators were not so numerous when they were told what the creature was, bt the reporter and scientist tried to catch it la order to preserve It for f utore generatlona. H., Aug. 14 An eminent lawyer of Baltimore, Miry land, John Henry Eeene, has recently written and published a wonderful booklet entitled "Christian Science and Its Enemies.'' In which he startllngly condemns the pul pit's unjust attacks upon Rev. Mary Baker G. Eddy and Christian Science, A representative of the press called on Mrs. Eddy to enquire as to her endorse ment of this book. In reply she said, "Upon reading the grand preface of Mr. Keene's book, I laid it aside from lack of time just then, and sent my compliments to the author with an order for said books. After persuing his book thor oughly, I changed my opinion, not of the author's talents, scholarship, and high intent (although I have never seen him,) but of the advisability of publishing the book, ami Immediately requested the parties to discontinue publishing It in its present form of treating the subject. I did this, solely, because the author's vehemence In denouncing the pulpit'i furious attacks upon me was not sonso- nanl with my Christian sentiment.
