GRAND JUtrS REMRT
Made t Aartt Term, Ssperlor Cwrtof

The following to th report ot the
Grand Jary aide at the Anguit term
of the Superior Court of Omen county,
to Hla Honor, Judge George H. Brown.
Superior Court lodge Geo. fl Brown
o.ugun terffl,iw ) preemmg,
We your Grand Jury beg leave to re
port that we hare received $7 blUi of In
dictment and aeted npon the tame, find
ing i5 true bUls aadU not true. We
hare alio made 10 preeentment for ta-
rloni oflenoe agabut the law.
We hare examined the County Home
for the care of Indigent poor and find
the tame cleanly and well kept with
tufflcient and wholenome food provided.
We alo commend the kindly attention
of the keeper of the Home toward theae
poor unfortunate. One Improvement
we suggest for the notion of the County
Commissioners is the purchase of SB
mall tingle iron bedstead for use in
the Home to replace the present form of
bedstead which we consider not of the
best sanitary nature.
We have examined the County Jail
and find the tame well and cleanly kept,
the prisoner well fed and no complaint
a to food, or treatment. We alto And
the Jail much crowded and the addition
of or completion of the Iron oellsa
originally planed by the Commissioners
much needed these additional cell are
much needed In the present crowded
condition of the jail for the separation
of the texct and their proper care and
we urge upon the Connty Commission
ers the erection of these additional cells.
We also And one poor crazy negro who
hat been in prison for several year who
we recommend should be placed In the
asylum for better care.
We alto have examined the Count
Court House and find the tame in good
condition and properly cared for.
We And the Register of Deed's office
and papers neatly and well kept and the
County Record in good shape. The
tame report we alio make in regard to
Superior Court clerk' office, alio the
Sheriff's office.
We find upon examination of the re
port of Supervisor of Roads that the
Supervisors for Township No. 1, Town
ship Mo. 5, Township No. 8, and Town-
hip No. 9 have made no report of the
condition of tbelr roads In their respec
tive township, and from Information
which we believe, the condition of the
Road In No. 8 Is In bad condition, and
we ask the Immediate attention of. the
Road Trustees to the condition of the
Road from the Fork of the Neuse Road
to Bachelor' Creek. This matter
should have proper attention at onoe as
the roads In many sect loot are In bad
condition.
We find npon examination of the Mag
Istrates report an undue proportion of
cases which appear to be made only for
the costs to be gotten out of them. Out
of a total of 75 cases reported we find by
the report tlx (8) ca were bound
over for appearance at next term of
court. 1 1 case In which fine were laid
amount to $38.53, the remainder 68
ne, oat of which the county get not
one penny.
We also find out of a total of $39,58
fine laid by the Xaglstnte $0.50 re
main In the band of the Magistrates not
having been paid Into the County Treas
urer.
We find In regard to the listing of
taxes the moat unsatisfactory condition
of affairs especially to la Township No.
8, out of a total of 2878 parsons liable
for Uxe for year 1001. We Had 498 on
the delinquent list, thoee who failed to
list as the law require making about one
In every six a delinquent
This same condition of affair v are
happy to aay does aot apply to the re
mainder of the Township of the coun
ty. '
We hope for a vigorous application Of
tne law to bring about a Bettor condition
in the 8th Township. '
Respectfally Submitted,

To The Democratic
Voters of raven
County.
The many friends of Sheriff J. W.
Blddle desire to present his claims to the
voters of Craven county for renomlna-
tlon and reeloctlon. The county has
never had a better officer; he Is courte
ous, accommodating, faithful and In
every way thoroughly competent.
When a vacancy occurred In the office
of Sheriff, on account of the resignation
of ex-Sheriff Einsey, the Board of Com
missioners endeavored to ascertain two
things: first, who was the most compet
ent man lu the county for the office, and
second, who would be most acceptable
to all the voters of the county. They
finally selected Bheriff Blddle as the;
were satisfied that he filled these two
qualifications better than any othor man
In the county. He has only been In of
fice a part of one term, and It would not
seem right to refuse to endorse his ad
ministration the first time he comes bo
fore the people. The people are fair and
just and would not Intentionally dis
honor any man without cause. It has
been claimed that all of the candidates
are from the town of Now Bern except
one. This Is not strictly correct; three
of the County Commissioners are from
the country, and two years sgo No. 1
Township had a most excellent candi
date for Register of Deeds who would
have been elected If his own township
had supported htm properly. Sheriff
Blddle was born and raised at Fort Barn
well and lived there until the war came
on, when he entered the service of the
Confederate Btatee and was a most gal
lant and faithful soldier. The people can
not do too much for the men who suf
fered and fought for the South during
the war. Of all the candidates upon the
ticket Mr. Blddle is the only representa
tive of the soldier vote. It is true a man
ought not to be selected to fill an office
because he was a brave soldier, but when
he Is In every way competent, the peo
ple ought not to forget such services as
the. While Mr. Blddle live In New
Bern, he was born and raised In the
country and still owns the, lands where
hla father lived before him.
We do not wish to disparage any
other candidate, a all the candidates
for office In thla County are good and
true men, whose; past services to the
Democratic party merit recognition and
entitle them to aspire to any office in
the County; But we do say that we do
not wish to cast any reflection upon
Sheriff Blddle by refuting to elect him
when he has only served a part of one
term. We have never, heard of an In
stance where a good man capable and
competent, who had been ' appointed to
the offioa of Snerlff has not received the
nomination at the hands of his party at
the succeeding Convention.
In submitting the claims of Bheriff
Blddle to the people of Craven county
we are only actuated by a desire to see
Justice done to a good officer, and we
have every oonfldenoe that the people of
Craven county will treat Sheriff Blddle
fairly, and will accord him a nomination
at the coming Primaries.
