The qoestlon. during the eomutg week will be one of reoaiptt and not of weather. This a. m, market opened weak and though the tone was weak, considerable resistance was notloeable. May and March ruled around 8.88 withont much trade till the Houston estimate for Monday wss made. This started a , few nervous shorts to cover In short order. This Is the tret time this season that receipts have swayed the market, for that reason we are Inclined to think they will cut more figure than the weather reports daring the coming week. Last year we had the large figures of something like 670,000 or 580,000. We will do well to get 800,000 bales this yesr. We don't see where the big receipts are coming from without a big port movement we can't have a big total in sight We would call attention to the movement this and next week and as long as fig ures fall from 100,000 to 200,000 bales be hind last year's figures each day as they did today, we would buy cotton on any and every break for a steady market. A Hew Snort For Women. "Hammering" la an unpleasant proc ess on the Stock Exchange, but In Aus tralia the word has recently acquired a new and more agseeable significance. At antipodean bazaars "hammering" Is now an established Institution. Ladles who enter for the competition go on a' platform with hammers In their hands. Bach Is supplied with a piece of the hard Australian timber largely used for the paving of London streets. Bach lady Is also presented with three nails, and at a given signal they start to work. The lady who Is tbe first to drive ber three nails home to the bead wins the prise. Says one descriptive reporter: "Steel sparks and splinters flew around. The nails would go any where but through tbe wood. The hammers would go anywbererbut on the nail heads." London Chronicle. The Ocean Trip. Half an hour or so appears to be an Important saving In time in the ocean voyage. Columbus and Cabot and Drake would not have thought much of it, bat In these days of ship speeding every captain of a liner Is ambitious to maintain his record and to beet It 'If possible. Again, there are people even' in this ago of hurry and bustle, to whom the ocean trip Is in itself an agreeable Incident. Tbe society Is gen-. erally pleasant, there are Interesting Bights on the deep, the fare Is as good as that of a first class hotel, seasick: ness has become unfashionable, there is plenty of reading matter and no dis position to look at it, and the nip Is In short a restful loaf till the ship Is with-' In range of tbe wireless telegraph and the meddling world resumes its chat ter.
