The leglsla- Uve joint committee having finished 1U examination of toe books. Touchers, etc in the offices of the State : treasurer and auditor, today made IU report. ; , The rsoelpts of the general fund, the report says were X 107,958 for the fiscal year ended, If orember 80th last, while the dltbuttemente were f 1,884,004, lesv tng 144,854 balance. A yen ego the balance was $8,000 on the wrong side of the ledger. The receipts of the eduoatlonal land were 110,175, the balance December 1, 1901, being $85,634; the dlsbttraenwnU were $8,790, leering on hand $48,909. ; There M a publlo school fund of $146,' 950 In State bonds In the treasurer's hands, this being the property of the State board of education.. It may be thst this fund or most Of It will be ap plied to the public schools In 1008. If this Is done it Will take a strain off the treasury. The fund came from the sale of swamp lands and the . bond! have been In the treasury a .number df years. The legislative Committee found the books of the treasurer and auditor to be admirably and correctly kept A charter is granted the Blddenite Granite Company, capital $100,009, with headquarters at Ballibary. Its quarries 111 be in Alexander county, near Bld denite. The legislative hall are being thor oughly cleaned, for the first time in many years. All the wood work and the walls as well are being cleaned with soap and water, and the Improvement is remarkable. A mad dog was killed here today after It had tried to bite three men and bad bitten a horse and eight dogs. As yet not $19 has been received from the public schools of the Btate as a re sult of the appeal for contributions on 'Xorth Carolina Day" this year for the Sir Walter Raleigh statue fund. The money will have to be raised by other means than this. Among today's arrivals were O D Mo- Iver, Greensboro; George Badger Harrlr, Henderson; H M Heath, Charlotte. The report of Adjutant General Beverly 8. Boyster, to the Governor was made today and says that daring the year there has been very de cided Improvement in (he general con. dltioa of the Btate Gaard. The offloers are Impressed with the need of attention to details and the result Is gratifying. The "Dick BUI", now before Con gress, will greatly benefit the gaard and grant $30,000 more of supplies annually It will also pay for Instruction of troops i afield service. The strength of the Gaard-e year ago was 80S8. It Is now 199S there being two Infantry regiments of 19 companies, a battery of light artillery foar naval militia divisions, three regi mental banda. There are one .Infantry and one division lest than hut year, and many companies has discharged sir in active and Inefficient men. . Che troops are well distributed in (he State so as to give all sections the bene fit of their aervieea. During (he year Ave Infantry companies and one division of naval militia were disbanded and four new companies accepted. ; There are to many applications on file that It would be easy to double the strength of the Guard. The oondltlon of the Guard is in most respects better than ever before. THINK HARD. It fays to Think Aboat Pood.
